Fearing reprisal, voters in Sopore and other constituencies of Baramulla district, which goes to polls on December 9, have requested the election authorities not to apply the indelible ink on their fingers after they cast the vote, sources informed.
Sources said that there are few areas which are known strongholds of separatist leaders who have given an election boycott call and others are militancy-hit.
Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (hard-line faction) is from Sopore and has given a call to boycott elections.
"Sopore has had a history of going with Geelani and even this time there is indications that the seat will witness very low voting. There has hardly been seen any posters or flags in the Sopore town, sources said.
Sources said that in past Mohammad Ashraf Ganaie, the sitting MLA of National Conference, had urged Geelani to reconsider his poll boycott call, arguing that it would benefit the BJP. He had also said that a BJP victory in Sopore would be given a "negative spin" by the national media.
