SRINAGAR, Dec 8: The promise of the people in power that the Srinagar won't get submerged again is aimed at defusing the anger among the people after they suffered a lot because of the devastating flood which struck the valley in the first week of September.
"Whenever it rains, it refreshes the horrible memories of the flood which caused havoc all over the valley particularly in the Srinagar city. We had hoped that the government will come with an answer so that the September 7 is not repeated. But to our utter disappointment, the authorities seem to be unmoved," said Sakeena, a resident of Rajbagh.
Sakeena says that the rainy season which begins in March is for sure to give the flood victims another dose of tension because it rains quite heavily in this season. There was enough time at the disposal of the government, as the winter remains mainly dry in Kashmir, to carry out the dredging of the rivers, rivulets and of course of the flood channels, she said.
Lot of siltation has taken place during the last many years and a result of it the rivers, the rivulets and the flood channels have lost the capacity to hold the flood water. The holding capacity of these water bodies gave answer in the month of September of the current and it will take more than 50 years to the people of the valley to come out this dilemma.
"The process of dredging and cutting in the Doodhganga stream was started in 2012 much to the delight of the people of the area. It was started from the Chanapora Bridge and the Barzulla Bridge at the same time and we had hoped that such process will be carried all over the valley," said Abdul Majeed from Chanapora.
But we don't know, as Majeed went on saying, that why the work was stopped midway after carrying it out for some months. After that the work of dredging wasn't started again till date and the fear of more floods loom large given the weak holding capacity of the water bodies.
Experts are of the view that if the dredging of the water bodies isn't taken up on the priority and on the war footing, then there might be even more trouble in store for the people of the valley and people will prefer hilly areas over the prized land of Rajbagh and Jawahar Nagar.
These experts are of the opinion that the dredging and cutting of the water bodies will serve many purposes at a time. Firstly it will enhance the water holding capacity of the rivers and streams. Secondly, the soil extracted as the result of the dredging and cutting can be used for the land filling purpose and most importantly, the government will generate a lot of revenue.
