SRINAGAR, Dec 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that humanity, democracy and Kashmiriyat are three pillars that would bring smiles on the faces of people of Kashmir valley. Modi asked people to give Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) a chance to form government in the state adding that other major mainstream political parties have deceived them in the past.
Addressing his maiden election rally in Kashmir at Sher-I-Kashmir Cricket Stadium here, Prime Minister said that he would carry forward the unfinished agenda of former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee of making the people of Kashmir valley happy. He asked for support from people in this regard and said that people should support BJP in its endeavour to form a stable government in the state.
"Years back Atal Ji talked about humanity, Kashmiriyat and democracy in order to bring relief to people of Kashmir. These are the three pillars which if used today would lead to solution of problems being faced by people. It would be my endeavour to carry forward the message and fulfill the dream of Atal Ji and," said Modi. The Prime Minister said that people of the Kashmir valley used various means in the past couple of decades to fulfill their genuine demands. He said that these means including the violent means have failed to deliver goods with people continuing to suffer. He added that he would like people to get associated with him while pursuing developmental agenda for the J&K state. "I have come here to share your pain and grief as well. Army jawans have been killed while carrying out operations in the Kashmir valley. Innocents have also been killed with mothers losing their sons due to the turbulent situation. It is my resolve to take Kashmir out of trouble so that it attains new heights. This is possible only with development and people have to come forward in this regard," said Modi.
The Prime Minister lamented that Kashmir valley has not seen much development over the past 67 years. He said the basic reason for this is that funds have not been utilized in the proper manner. He added that there is need to improve the infrastructure so that Kashmir becomes one of the preferred tourist destinations across the globe. "In the past you have elected governments of Congress, father-son duo and father-daughter duo. These people have just exploited your sentiments and done nothing for the people of the state. Let you make a change this time around and give BJP a chance. I assure you that people would feel relieved once the BJP forms the new government in the state," said Modi. The Prime Minister said that his sole agenda is development in the country adding that parameters of development would be same in Jammu & Kashmir. He said that there would be no discrimination with any part of state as far as development is concerned. He alleged that previous dispensations have been following discriminatory attitude in the past. "There are people who say that Jammu is being discriminated as compared to Kashmir and vice-versa. At the same time there are people within Kashmir who say that they are being discriminated. This has happened in the past but let me assure you that there would be no more discrimination among the people of state," said Modi. The Prime Minister said that there is a need to develop infrastructure at lesser known tourist destinations in the valley so that they too come up on the tourist map. He said that tourists always want to visit new places and in this regard Kashmir valley has many things to offer for the people who come from different places of world. "I am the Pradhan Sewak of my people and have been visiting the Kashmir valley regularly. I visited the state in July, August, Sep, Oct and Nov and now I am here in Dec. Let me promise that I will come next year as well. At the same time it pains me that two generations of youth have suffered immensely in Kashmir due to daunting proportions assumed by unemployment," said Modi. The Prime Minister said that his government would take all steps to ensure that Kashmir regains its glory as it is famous for Pashmina, Saffron, Dal Lake and Houseboats across the globe. He said that water resources of the Kashmir valley are sufficient enough to supply power to the entire country. "I want to change the notion that water and youth of mountains are of no use to the land where these mountains are located. There is a need to change this notion and once that happens all the youth of Kashmir would get jobs here only. At the same time the power generated from water resources can light up houses across the country. My vision is of development for all the people and Jammu & Kashmir fits the bill in this regard as well," said Modi. The Prime Minister said that state government was sleeping at the time of flood adding that it failed to spend Rs. 1,000 crores sanctioned as relief for flood affected people. He said that people at helm in state have failed to come up to the expectations of flood affected since they are desperate after being hit by a natural calamity. "When I came here on Diwali I was amazed when the flood affected people told me not to hand over the relief amount to the state government. They said that relief amount should be credited to their bank accounts. This shows that people of Kashmir valley believe me and not the state government. This is truly worthy for me and I can go to extent in repaying this faith," said Modi. The Prime Minister said that he would like Kashmir to follow the developmental model of Kutch in Gujarat. He said Kutch has come up as one of the most developed districts of the country after the 2001 devastating earthquake. He expressed the hope that Kashmir would follow suit and attain higher models of development. "Corruption is a big problem in the country and we have to root out this problem once for all. Corruption has eaten the very vitals of the society and it has virtually halted the march towards development. Terrorism has come to an end, but not corruption. During the recent SAARC meeting I told the heads of other SAARC nations that corruption and poverty are two challenges before us and they need to be overcome on collective basis," said Modi. Referring to the punishment meted out to army personnel involved in killing of two civilians at Chattargam in Budgam district, the Prime Minister said that it was for the first time that army personnel were accounted for their wrong doing. He said it is the commitment of his government to ensure that discipline is maintained by the forces. "Over the years the army has rendered numerous sacrifices in Kashmir but at the same time we will not allow anybody to take law in their own hands. It is our commitment to provide justice to the people and we stand by this commitment. Whosoever takes law in his hand will not be spared and justice will be done," said Modi. He said that 35,000 police personnel have been killed across the country since 1947 while maintaining law & order.
