As mercury dips, prolonged power cuts return to haunt valleyites | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari
BANDIPORA, Dec 10: The winter season is yet to begin and the power woes for the people have already gone worse, as scores of villages staged massive demonstrations against the PDD for unscheduled power cuts here in Bandipora district of North Kashmir today. According to local residents of Sumbal, Shadipora, Naidkhai, Sonawari, Bandipora and other adjoining areas who took to streets at Sumbal and staged protests against the Power Development Department. Hundreds of people, including women on Wednesday took to streets, protesting against the Power Development Department (PDD) for power failure at Nadihal, Papchan, Ajas in Bandipora district of North Kashmir. Nisar Ahmad Bhat of Sumbal told Early Times that in absence of electricity, people face hardships daily while students are forced to study under candle-light. we have been forced to take to streets. "if the power situation in the areas doesn't improve, they would be constrained to launch agitation. "We are regularly paying our electricity dues, yet the power supply in our area is dismal," Bhat said. Various residents from areas including SK Bala, Sonawari,Hajin and other localities complained of erratic power supply; they said, "unscheduled power cuts was causing huge inconvenience to people in the biting cold conditions and also troubling students who are preparing for various state and central level examinations". Raising slogans against the PDD and state government, the villagers said there was no need to hike in the electricity fee as they are not even getting power for few hours. The government has increased tariff several times but there is no power, they alleged.The protesters shouted slogans against the PDD in particular and government in general, as they blame that till second phase of assembly elections they was no unscheduled power cut in their areas. "PDD is resorting to unscheduled power cuts even in the metered areas. We are facing immense hardships due to erratic power supply," they informed."People came out in large numbers and chanted anti-government slogans. They said they had been facing the problem of erratic power supply for the past five days," sources said. There are power failures for more than 13 hours in the rural areas, the situation is getting equally woeful in every part of the Bandipora district.Repeated attempts to contact senior officials of PDD Bandipora for comments on the issue proved futile. |
