Immaterial; just for sycophancy, appeasement of NC leadership
Hiding foundation stone in JU!
12/10/2014 11:57:06 PM
ET Report
Jammu, Dec 10: Installation of foundation stone which should have been ideally mark of respect and honour for the man who laid the first brick of campus has been turned into exercise of sycophancy and appeasement of those who are in power by well-read academicians and scientists for petty interests.
One such stone was laid by founder of National Conference (NC) late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on December 16, 1976 when the construction of University of Jammu had started. This stone has its own story like the well-guarded graveyard in Kashmir valley. This was laid by NC patriarch and founder Late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah when the campus was sanctioned for Jammu region and construction began in the year 1976.
Since the day the stone was installed, university officials maintain that no attempt was ever made to place at a location where it is visible and where all those entering the university could figure out who laid the first stone. Ask for the reasons and you would be told that even a powerful NC government which was formed after the 1996 elections in the state failed to get the stone installed at a position where it becomes visible to all.
Prof. R.L. Sharma during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor (VC) in an attempt to impress the then Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah had got the small foundation stone replaced with a huge memorabilia constructed in the university campus but he had wisely ensured that the same is kept in the lawn of Jammu University Guest House where it had been originally put up. The area around the foundation stone was properly fenced.
After Sharma, none bothered about the foundation stone since NC had gone out of power. In the year 2009, when NC returned to power, Prof. Mohan Pal Singh Isher for reasons known to him decided to get the existing memorabilia replaced with a bigger and brighter one. On December 16, 2013; Isher got newly crafted and well-designed stone inaugurated by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He could not explain reasons for this even to himself but this did win him some applause from aides of Omar.
Isher, according to insiders wanted extension in tenure and was advised by his aides to somehow impress Omar Abdullah. For this, sources said that they advised Isher to get the foundation stone decked up and upgraded from what it was. He immediately accepted the idea and got the foundation turned into a memorabilia to impress Omar. The Chief Minister inaugurated the foundation stone but when it came to giving extension, Isher had to quit even before expiry of his term.
Appease and sycophancy won him no friends. After Isher left the university, seniormost professor R.D. Sharma was appointed as acting VC. Sharma began with a bang and from day 1 has been leaving no stone unturned in appeasing those in power and those expected to come to power. Insiders maintain that Sharma first made all efforts to ensure ABVP wins the JURSEA elections and later, when ABVP lost, disallowed casting of a vote which could have won JURSEA all posts.
First incidence of violence took place in the campus when some miscreants damaged the memorabilia located on a corner of JU guest house lawn during Sharma's tenure, sources accepted. They said that VC immediately got the foundation stone replaced overnight and then, followed this up by suspending two security guards, both are assigned the task of guarding the guest house and not the memorabilia. If the insiders are to be believed, Sharma is also making all possible efforts to appease those in power and those expected to come to power.
