ANANTNAG, Dec 10: All India Congress Committee (AICC) President, Sonia Gandhi today said that entering in coalition with regional parties in Jammu & Kashmir is a compulsion and it is done to keep 'communal' forces out of the picture.
Sonia made these remarks while addressing an election rally in the Shangus assembly constituency of South Kashmir's Anantnag district. She claimed that Congress party will emerge as the single largest party in the ongoing assembly elections and form the next government in the state with the help of regional parties.
"Congress party has always pursued a pro-people policy and it is due to this reason that people always associate themselves with Congress. The party has been gaining popularity in the state and we have been able to make great gains across the state. Our agenda and policy are in tune with the people's aspirations and as such we would be able to form the next government in the state," said Sonia.
The AICC President claimed that due to its pro-people policies and agenda Congress party is gaining popularity in every part of the state. She exuded confidence of winning majority of the seats in ongoing elections adding that this would pave the way for the formation of Congress led government in the state.
"Yes we forged alliance with regional parties but that was our compulsion to keep the communal forces out. We cannot wish away this compulsion since we do not want communal forces to assume power in Jammu & Kashmir. We have done this in the past and we cannot rule out this possibility in future as well," said Sonia.
The AICC President took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the PM failed to live up to the expectations of people of state after the devastating flood of September. She said that people had high expectations from Modi during his visit to Kashmir recently adding that the hopes were dashed to the ground.
"The government led by Narendra Modi has failed to rehabilitate the flood hit people of the valley. The Prime Minister came here and made big promises to the flood ravaged people about their rehabilitation. But on return he forgot his promises. He only came and returned and did nothing," Sonia said. She accused the BJP of making hoax promises and doing nothing for the flood hit people of the valley.
The AICC President said that when earthquake hit Uri Congress rebuilt the quake hit area within months only. She said that BJP government led by Modi has no rehabilitation policy for the flood hit people of state. She added that government should pull up socks and provide relief to people who have been hit by flood badly.
Sonia asked the people to vote for Congress candidates and said that a stable government led by Congress would provide relief to the people more so after the ravaging flood. She said if Congress forms the next government in the state then a proper rehabilitation policy for flood hit people would be drawn up.
