Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 10 : Tight security has been put in place ahead of the fourth and the fifth phase polling in the bordering districts, which will go to polls on December 14 and 20. Keeping in view the recent militant attacks in Uri Sector, in which 21 people including an Army Officer were killed and in Arnia sub-sector wherein 12 people were killed, the security grid has been strengthened in the bordering districts for peaceful and "incident-free" polling. Besides additional deployment of troops and enhanced check points at all the entry and exit points, strict vigil is being maintained in the bordering belts of Jammu, Kathua and Samba districts.
On December 4, two Assembly constituencies Samba and Vijaypur in Jammu region besides three Districts of Srinagar including Srinagar, Anantnag and Shopian will go to poll while on December 20, 11 Assembly Constituencies of Jammu, four of Rajouri and five of Kathua districts will go to polls. The Rajouri district is located close to the Line of Control while Jammu, Samba and Kathua are few kilometers away from the international border.
"There will be no compromise on security and adequate measures are being taken to maintain vigil and round the clock surveillance in the bordering belts as polling will be held in these belts in the last two phases," a senior police official here said.
He said the security arrangements have been put in place in assistance with the Border Security Force, which is manning the international border and regular meetings are being held with them on timely basis. However, a senior Army Officer maintained that apart from sensitive locations along the international border, security has been increased in the Rajouri district close to the LoC. "Alert troops are maintaining 24x7 vigil on the border as attempts to disrupt the poll process by the enemy cannot be ruled out," he added. Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Shantmanu yesterday had reviewed the election preparedness in Rajouri district.
Mr Shantmanu reviewed security related issues, transport plan, communication and material-management plan.
He laid stress on greater coordination among the civil administration, police and para military forces for ensuring free, fair and smooth elections.
IGP Jammu Zone Rajesh Kumar also emphasised on increasing the deployment of police personnel in hyper sensitive zones.
However, in the fourth Phase, 182 candidates are in fray in four districts while 213 candidates will be in fray for 20 seats in three districts for the fifth-phase polls.
