Anantnag votes for 'Change', defies boycott call | Youth voted to keep BJP 'out of Picture' | | Saahil Suhail

Anantnag, Dec 14: Defying militant threat, serve weather conditions and separatist boycott call, about 59.58 per cent polling was recorded in six assembly segments of Anantnag district. According to official figures among 4, 95,052 voters 2, 94, 968 voters of the district turned to vote, apparently for 'change'; however the overall polling percentage is approximately 4 percent less than 2008 assembly election poll turnout. No untoward incident was reported in the district; however workers of political parties clashed with each other at several places in the district. An official spokesman said Anantnag assembly segment recorded 38.67 percent turnout 3 percent less than of 2008 assembly election voter turnout which was 41.32 percent. This was followed by 63.98 per cent in Dooru, 65.19 per cent in Kokernag, 67.33 percent in Shangus, 53.87 percent in Bijbehara and 69.67 per cent in Phalgam. Altogether, there were 631 polling stations in the six assembly segments of the district. Of these, polling stations in the Anantnag, Bijbehara town were bracketed as hypersensitive and sensitive while as rest, mostly in remote areas were normal. Over 100 companies of CRPF, CISF and BSF were deployed in the district for peaceful polling by the Election Commission of India. Notable among the contesting candidates include People's Democratic Party (PDP) Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, , Minister for Tourism, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Haj & Auqaf Minister, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, ML A Bijbehara Abdul Rehman Veeri, MLC Bashir Ahmad Veeri, MLA Phalgam Mohd Rafi Mir and MLA Shangus Peer Mansoor. Great enthusiasm was witnessed among the youngsters (First time voters) who voted for change and for keeping the Hindu Nationalist Party BJP out of Picture. "For the first time I cast my vote to bring a change in the prevailing system but the main reason for casting vote in this election was to keep BJP away from the state politics which perceives anti-Kashmir and communal agenda." Syed Tajam-ul-Nisar, a youth told Early Times after casting his vote. |
