JAMMU, Dec 14: Interesting developments are unfolding in Jammu & Kashmir. On the one hand, the BJP has abandoned its ideology to appease Kashmiri fanatics in its bid to open its account in the Valley and on the other the PDP has openly hailed the Narendra Modi's Gujarat Model. Likewise, the NC has not been leaving any stone unturned to blacken the face of the Congress beyond recognition and the vice-versa. They are coalition partners and they are holding each other responsible for their unpopularity. The NC is saying that the Omar government couldn't perform because the Congress created insurmountable problems for it and the Congress says that it wanted to fulfill the promises but failed because Omar Abdullah consistently put his foot down. Indeed, both the parties are doing all that they could to ensure each other's defeat.
On Saturday, an interesting development took place. The case in point is the commitment of JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz that the Congress candidate from Akhnoor Sham Lal Sharma will be given a crucial role in case the Congress was voted to power by the people. "If the Congress is elected to power, party candidate from Akhnoor Sham Lal Sharma will be given a crucial role," he said while addressing an election meeting at Akhnoor and added that "this would help him fulfill the aspirations of the people of Jammu". "The Congress is fully committed to establishing regional councils in the state and decentralizing powers to these institutions. It is up to the people of Jammu to give Congress majority in Assembly and all their issues will be addressed," Soz also said. That Soz said that Sham Lal Sharma would be given a crucial role if the people voted the Congress to power was very significant considering the latter's views on Jammu & Kashmir and his insistence that the next Chief Minister of the state should be a Hindu from Jammu province. It was not once but at least four times that Sharma urged the people of Jammu province to give mandate to the Congress so that the state got a Hindu Chief Minister and an empowered regional council. His Bani (Kathua) statement is still too fresh to be forgotten. At Bani, Sharma had opposed autonomy and self-rule and demanded trifurcation of the state. "Give Kashmir whatever it wants, give UT status to Ladakh and give the status of statehood to Jammu. Kashmiri leadership is Valley-centric. It has always discriminated against Jammu. Jammu cannot obtain its legitimate due until and unless it is segregated from Kashmir," he had, among other things, said. It bears recalling that his statement that the state be trifurcated had evoked a very strong reaction not only from Kashmiri leaders but also from certain very senior Congress leaders both from Kashmir and Jammu. So much so, they had appealed to Sonia Gandhi to take action against Sham Lal Sharma saying his statements posed a danger to the unity and integrity of the state, but failed.
Sharma replicated Bani several times at different places, including Akhnoor. Now that none other than the JKPCC chief, who enjoys very good relations with the Congress high command, has promised a crucial role to Sham Lal Sharma, it is time to appreciate him. But more than that, the statement of Soz also indicates that political wind is blowing against the Congress and that he is only making last-ditch efforts to improve the poll prospects of the Congress party in Jammu province.
