| 2 Fire Services Deptt employees beaten up | | | M S Nazki

MENDHAR, Jan 28: Two employees of department of fire services were beaten up by an angry mob here late last night after water in a fire tender, that was engaged to extinguish fire in heaps of dry grass in a field at Gursai Mohalla near here, was exhausted. Heaps of dry grass belonging to Abdul Ghani and his brother Usman Ghani, both sons of Faiz Hussain, were set afire in their field at Gursai Mohalla by some unknown persons after midnight on Tuesday.
Two fire tenders were pressed into service by the fire services department. While extinguishing fire, water of one of the tenders was exhausted. This angered the people who had gathered there. While the tender was being taken for refilling water in it, they caught hold of two employees of the fire services department and gave them a severe beating, police sources said.
The injured - Mohammad Khaliq Khan (mechanic driver) and Mohammad Shafiq (SDCT) - were admitted to sub-district hospital, Mendhar.
In protest against the incident of fire, people gathered at Gursai on Mendhar-Surankote road at about 9 am today and blocked it to vehicular traffic. They dispersed at about 1 pm after the concerned SDPO and naib-tehsildar visited the spot and assured that police would enquire into the incident.
Meanwhile, Nazir, incharge of fire services department, Mendhar, said the department would lodge an FIR against the people who had beaten the two employees. |
