SOCH, RPF jointly hold ‘awareness cum material distribution’ camp

JAMMU, Feb 17: As part of its efforts to create a child friendly society and promote awareness on child rights, Society for Cardinal Human Values (SOCH) in association with Railway Police Force (RPF), Northern Railway organized ‘awareness cum Material Distribution Camp’ for the down trodden children particularly involved in ‘rag picking’ from the tracks of Jammu Tawi Railway station.
Dr Digvijoy Phukan Central University, Deputy Chief Officer Jagdish Sharma, Rohit Jandyal , Bhupesh, Rajan Sharma and Volunteers of SOCH rendered their missionary services.
Earlier it commenced with a brief lecture from Elltut Mish ,a student of Social Work who awared the children about the importance of education.
The lecture was followed by various learning activities organized by SOCH volunteers and students from Department of Sociology and Social Work, Central University of Jammu (CUJ). Resource persons also asked the community leaders present in the event to ensure that the childhood of these children should not lost. The event concluded with the distribution of warm clothes, food items and notebooks and pencils among the children.
Meanwhile speaking to the media person present on this occasion Manajri Singh, member in SOCH highlighted the plight of the children who are involved in rag picking.
She mentioned that these children did not have access to basic facilities and their condition of living are highly exploitative and non-child friendly environment. She mentioned several cases where the children suffered serious injuries which are running between tracks. Singh also thanked the District Administration and RPF, Northern Railway for extending their due cooperation to hold such an event.
Reiterating the commitment of SOCH towards the creation of a child-friendly society, Singh said that in the coming months the organisation is planning to initiate a non-formal school for these children and a vocational training centre for the adolescent girls in the low income communities near the station. She also lauded the efforts of Eltut Mish, for his missionary zeal and hoped it will improve the plight of the weaker sections of the society in Jammu & Kashmir.
