Race for top cop post begins in J&K | 5 Sr IPS officers start intense lobbying to bag coveted post | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 17: Even as DGP K Rajendra is scheduled to retire from service in September 2016, hectic lobbying has started in the state to replace him. At least five senior IPS officers aspire to become the state police chief and are trying to get close to the central and state BJP leadership to bag the coveted post. While the word of state chief minister is going to be ultimate on the choice of the police chief and still one and a half year is left for Rajendra to retire, the prospective DGPs don't want to miss the opportunity. An insider said almost everyone of them had begun meeting the central and the state BJP leaders and their supporters in the home ministry to project them as DGP. An IPS officer must have completed 30 years of service to become a DGP. P L Gupta is the seniormost in the list but he would attain superannuation before Rajendra's retirement. Five other officers are then left in the race and among them, S K Misra is the seniormost. A 1985 batch IPS officer, he is on central deputation since 2008. He is holding an important assignment in BSF and would complete his 30 years in service this year. He is to retire in 2019. The next is Dr S Gopal Reddy who is also 1985 batch IPS officer. He is on deputation since 2011 and is serving in his own state on a good position. But he would retire in October 2016, a month after the Rajendra's retirement. He is therefore out of the race. Next to him is Dr S P Vaid who belongs to the 1986 batch of IPS officers. He would complete his 30 years of service in 2016 and retire in 2019. D R Doley of the same batch is also going to retire in 2019. Naveen Aggarwal also belongs to the same batch but he would retire in 2021. All these five officers want to bag the DGP's post but one of them is also going to attain superannuation and two others are on deputation to the Centre for the past few years. Of the remaining two, Vaid is the seniormost and would retire three years after the Rajendra's retirement. Aggarwal would attain superannuation five years after the Rajendra's retirement. |
