Omar- Rahul bonhomie cracking NC from within | Party veterans aghast over NC- Cong. alliance for Upper House | | Early Times Report
srinagar, Feb 17: With Omar Abdullah again given preference to friendship over the unanimous party decision of supporting Congress during LC elections, the veterans within the party are out in open against this 'unnatural bonhomie'. Sources have told Early Times that NC's working President Omar Abdullah has intimated to his party cadres that NC and Congress are going to contest the upcoming LC elections jointly and that the basic objective of both the parties would be to gain maximum seats in the Upper House. Moments after the decision came to fore, scores of NC leaders expressed dismay over the decision, saying the mistakes of the past are being repeated once again. Earlier, it was Rahul Gandhi, the AICC vice-president who is also Omar's close friend who had urged Omar to support Azad for the Rajya Sabha polls against the party decision, the Congress had succeeded once again in its plans to stay relevant in Jammu and Kashmir with the help of the other drubbed party- National Conference. Sources said that NC is striving to strike best possible deal for the LC elections with the Congress but the party cadres within NC are against this marriage. "It would be another attempt of suicide for the party after the recently held polls. Again we are committing the same blunder of joining hands with the party which has left no stone unturned in tarnishing our image in Jammu and Kashmir," said one of the party leaders wishing not to be named. He added that it was Congress in the state which spewed venom against the National Conference during the campaign for the state elections of 2014. "Wasn't it the state Congress chief Saif-ud-din Soz and Azad who accused us of being corrupt and incapable of governing the state," said another NC leader. Substantiating his claims, the NC veteran said that Congress earlier termed the coalition with NC a 'blunder' committed by the party in the state. "What is compelling the Congress again to knock our doors?" asked the NC leader. Several others from the party told ET that even if the NC lost the LC seats, it should not joined hands with the Congress and that the party must uphold the principles of unanimity in making of the subtle decisions. Pertinently, the PDP-BJP alliance which won three Rajya Sabha seats, are according to reports likely to sweep nine seats. Though both the BJP and PDP are yet to announce the formation of coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir, the duo could possibly join hands for the LC elections and gain dominance in the Upper House. Of these 11 seats, eight seats have fallen vacant as the term of MLCs expired while three members Davendar Rana (NC) Ashraf Mir (PDP) and Abdul Majed Larme (NC) were elected to the Legislative Assembly during the polls conducted in 2014. |
