Shivratri celebrated with religious fervor across Jammu

Jammu, Feb 17: "Maha Shivratri" was today celebrated with much enthusiasm and religious fervour in various temples and shrines across the Jammu City.
Heavy rush of devotees (Shiv Bhakts) was witnessed in the temples right since early morning with people including women and children turning up in large numbers to seek blessings on holy occasion.
The temples were also well illuminated and decorated with flowers and other material to give the day a festive and holy look. Although, all the temples were thronged by the devotees of Lord Shiva, but the major rush was witnessed at Ranvireshwar Mandir, Shalamar and Aap Shambhu Mandir at Roop Nagar.
Mahashivratri (Lord Shiva's night), which occurs on the 14th day of the Phalgun month according to Hindu calendar, has a very special importance for the Hindus.
As per Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva married Maa Parvati (Gouri) on this day.
People perform special rituals on this day. They offer water, milk, honey, flowers and Biipatri to the holy Shiva Lingam. Rudrabhishek of the Shiv Lingam is also performed by the devotees. It is believed that all these are liked by Lord Shiva and the almighty showers all blessings on his devotees. The devotees also observe fast on this day.
The devotees spend the day and night worshiping Lord Shiva and perform "Chaar Paher Pooja" in true traditional style. At many temples, the marriage of Lord Shiva is also performed during the night with full religious fervor and rituals. Huge crowd of devotes was witnessed at the Aap Shambu Mandir, Roop Nagar where special security arrangements were also made by the administration as the temple is famous for the annual "Shivratri Mela".
Large number of devotees also thronged the historic Peer Kho cave, Aap Shambu temple, Satwari, Shiv Parvati Mandir, Bikram Chowk and Bahu Fort where special prayers were offered to Lord Shiva. Devotees believe that on Shivratri, the divine energy of Lord Shiva is so overpowering that it transcends on to the devotees who worship him.
Also at many temples and other places, langer's (common kitchen) were organized by the people for the devotees where people were served "Parsad".
Tableaux depicting the life and role of Lord Shiva were also taken out at several places in the city by various religious groups in which people from all the walks of life participated and took the blessings of Lord Shiva.
Along with other parts of the country, The Great Night of Lord Shiva (Maha Shivratri ) celebrated with religious fervor and zeal across Kathua where temples were specially decorated and whole the city turned into Shiv Bhakti.
People of different age groups, including children, young and elders, thronged the temples for paying obeisance to Lord Shiva and offering Sweet water on the holy Shivlingam. The devotees especially offered Bael and Bael Patri (Golden Apple and its leaves) to Lord Shiva amidst chanting of 'Om Namah Shivaya'. In this regard, hundreds of devotees thronged in 5500 years old Historical Shiva Temple namely Aap Shambhu ( Rakh Shiani) and offered Bael and sweet water. Long queues have been seen where devotees recites Om Nama Shiva whole the day.
NR Sharma, Secretary of the trust said the temple situated thousands years ago where people across the state reach here on The Great Night of Lord Shiva to pay obeisance and sought God's blessing. Sharma said Community Kitchen and Dangal shall also be organized following day of Shiv Ratri.
Shivratri was celebrated with great enthusiasm on Tuesday at Udhapur and people including women and children thronged the temples of ancient lord Shiva temple at sacred Davika river Udhampur and performed Puja for their mental peace and prosperity.
Thousands of devotees thronged to Davika river and after taking holy bath pay obeisance at lord Shiva temple on the occasion.
According to Pujari APP Shambu temple Madan lal Festival of Mahashivaratri has tremendous significance in Hinduism. He said Shivratri festival that falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalgun and according to one of the most popular legends, Shivaratri is the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Parvati. He added that on this day devotees observe day and night fast and give sacred bath to Shiva Linga with honey, milk, water etc. Hindus consider it extremely auspicious to worship Lord Shiva on a Shivaratri as it is believed that worship of Lord Shiva with devotion and sincerity absolves a devotee of past sins.
Maha Shivratri, which literally translates to 'great night of Shiva' was celebrated with great enthusiasm and religious fervor while more than one thousand devotees visited Dewana Mandiron Tuesday.
Right from early in the morning huge rush of devotees was witnessed at Dewana Mandir of Lord Shiva. Amidst chanting of religious slogans (Jaikaras) of Lord Shiva the devotees thronged highly decorated temples and shrines and offered special prayers. They also offered holy water, flowers, Bel Patri and other things, which are dearer to 'Mahadev'.
Like every year Vishal Bhandara were organized at Dewana Mandir Pacca Danga by Rakesh Mahajan, Nikhil Mahajan, Akash Dogra, Jaghmohan, Raju Ji, Sham Shunder & others.
Vikram Singh PDP leader also served langer to the devotees on the eve of Shivratri with religious fervor and gaiety. Wherein the devotees partook Prasad and invoked the blessings of Goddess.
