Unsafe water supply posing 'health hazards' in Rajouri

Rajouri, Feb 17: After more than 230 cases of Typhoid cases were reported from Rajouri city, 48 including about 12 children of Diarrhea reported from Sagra Mohalla in Topa village in Darhal of Rajouri have revealed that unhygienic supply of drinking water is posing a great health hazard to the people across the district. Sources in health department said that atleast 230 Typhoid cases were reported at District Hospital and more are still pouring during last five days.
"Immediately after the breakout of Typhoid, Health officials including Chief Medical Officer (CMO), District Health Officer (DHO) District Immunization Officer (DIO) swung into action and constituted various team to educate the people about the reasons, remedial and precautionary steps to be taken to prevent the Typhoid from further spread," sources said. Dr Rajiv Sharma, Chief Medical Officer (CMO, Dr Chaman Bhasin Distt Health Officer (DHO) too have issued advisories to the people specially inhabitants of Rajouri city and its adjoining areas to drink water after boiling it for more than 10 minutes. Meanwhile Dr Mehmood, Medical Superintendent District Hospital (DH) Rajouri that the root cause of Typhoid breakout could be contaminated water and during last one weak more than 1300 patients were examined at district hospital out of which about 240 were tested positive.
Sources recalling the sequence of event said, "In the early hours on Monday Panch of Topa village informed Dr Iqbal Malik, BMO that about 48 people were complaining about gastrointestinal infection and are not in a position to move to sub district hospital at Darhal."
They said that immediately after the information a medical team led by Dr Malik along with necessary medicines and Glucose rushed to the village and started treatment.
Dr Iqbal Malik, Block Medical Officer (BMO), Darhal when contacted said after investigation it was established that Diarrhea gripped the locality after the inhabitants have consumed contaminated water supplied by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department main tank feeding the locality. Dr Iqbal said that 12 children and 36 adults who were complaining stomachache and nausea besides acute dysentery and vomiting were provided necessary treatment at their places and at Health Sub Centre at Topa. He added as per locals all the ailing people had consumed water from the same PHE water tank and alleged that before the samples of the water could be collected the PHE officials have cleaned the Tank. "Contaminated water could be the possible reason behind spreading of diarrhea in the locality and people have been advised to drink boiled water, he said and added that a medical team will again visit the village on Wednesday.
