Residents of Banihal protest against PHE

BANIHAL, June 20 : Hundreds of villagers of village Tethar in Banihal today staged a protest demonstration against PHE Department on Jammu Srinagar highway and blocked the vehicular movement of the traffic on highway for more than two hours.
The villagers including women are protesting against the PHE department for not providing them proper drinking water facility in the area. However after the intervention of and assurance of District adminstration Ramban the villagers lifted their protest (dharna) after two hours . Reports Said that on Saturday morning the villagers of Tethar Banihal which is situated on Jammu Srinagar highway took to streets and staged a protest dharna on Jammu Srinagar highway some 8 kilometers from Banihal town.The villagers alleged that during the holy month of Ramzan no drinking water is available in their supply water pipe lines due to unknown reasons from past some months .They shouted slogans against the PHE department and their officers. Protesters Said the a construction company Nauyuga which is engaged in construction of fore lane tunnel in the area are providing them water through water tanker but it does not full their need and they demanded the permanent solution for drinking water in the area. Soon after the protest SDPO Banihal Mohammad Rafiq, Naib tehsildar and some other officers of public health engineering department rushed to the spot and try to motivate the protesters. When protesters not motivated by them then DDC Ramban Farooq Shah Bukhari intervened in to the matter and telephonically he assured the protesters for providing and maintain the proper drinking water facility within two days. After the assurance of DDC the protesters lift the protest and police resumed the traffic after two hours, which take police and traffic police to hours to clear the traffic jam. In this connection when contacted the concerned AEE of the department Nazir Ahmed said that due to the decrease in the ground water level in the area the maximum sources of water are dried. He said that they will provide the water to village with the company tanker and they have only one tanker in the department at Banihal .
