Udhampur, June 25: A workshop cum seminar on the theme 'Responsibility of media in social engineering' was organised at Sher-I-Kashmir Police Academy Udhampur in which officer of the rank of Dy.SP and Inspectors were present. The main objective of the workshop was to sensitise the Police which is an enforcing agency and directly dealing with the subject and to handle the cyber crime related to social engineering.
"The fundamental function of media, both print and mass media, is to inform people, educate them and guiding the society", guest speaker Dinesh Mahajan from largest circulated Hindi Daily Dainik Jagran said. Quoting Mark Twain he said "There are only two forces that can carry light to all corners of the globe…the sun in the heavens and the associated press (a news agency) down here."
He said, "the media apparently has occupied a place of immense importance in today's society but with emergence of computer era and social sites the risks of disfiguring the social set up by flaring the issues and phishing has made the media more burdened to aware the people about do's and don'ts."
Here is one simple question what is Social Engineering?, he said, "Social engineering is the art of manipulating people so they give up confidential information. The types of information these criminals are seeking can vary, but when individuals are targeted the criminals are usually trying to trick you into giving them your passwords or bank information, or access your computer to secretly to gain control over one's computer or bank account .
"Criminals use social engineering tactics because it is usually easier to exploit your natural inclination to trust than it is to discover ways to hack your software, Mahajan said adding, "security is all about knowing who and what to trust.
"You might be asked urgently ask for your help-your 'friend' is stuck in country X, has been robbed, beaten and is in the hospital. They need you to send money so they can get home and they tell you how to send the money to the criminal or donation for charitable fundraiser, or some other cause - with instructions on how to send the money to the criminal, he said cautioning, " user needs to be cautioned and aware about such messages whether they are trustworthy or not, in any case he/she should talk to sender if known to him. "Sometimes message may notify you that you're a 'winner'. Maybe the email claims to be from a lottery, or a dead relative, or the millionth person to click on their site, etc, what you need to be careful and watchful against such messages, don't fell a prey, he added. "Curiosity leads to careless clicking-if you don't know what the email is about, never click it,, Mahajan said adding, " always beware of any download. If you don't know the sender personally downloading anything is a grave mistake."
Set your spam filters to high, if you want to be a guarded, while secure computing devices by Installing updated anti-virus software and keep these up-to-date.
