Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 25: The state government is mulling to increase the security cover of moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and his two colleagues professor Abdul Gani Bhat and Bilal Gani Lone.
"The security and intelligence wings are examining the threat perception to these leaders in view of series of militant attacks in Sopore," a well-placed source told Early Times.
He said the government had earlier ordered a review of the threat perception to the three moderate separatists. "The government is ready to enhance the security cover to the trio," the source said.
After the attacks by militants in Sopore last month, inputs were received by the intelligence agencies that the threat perception to Mirwaiz Bhat and Lone has increased.
"The state authorities have already intimated the three separatist leaders that there is increased risk to their lives and their cover needs to be intensified. The trio has shown willingness for more security cover," said the source, adding that at this moment a "discreet security cover has been provided to these separatist leaders besides regular guards at their residences."
While Mirwaiz and Bhat have a round-the-clock police protection, Lone's fortified residence at posh Sanat Nagar is guarded exclusively by a posse of paramilitary CRPF.
The government is also considering curtailing the list of people wanting to meet them. "Bulletproof vehicles may also be provided to them in view of the recent alerts," the sources said. Besides heading the moderate faction of Hurriyat, Mirwaiz is Kashmir's chief imam. Bhat, who has been a former chairman of the Hurriyat, grabbed headlines after his meeting with the PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed ahead of the government formation.
Bhat had termed Mufti as his 'good friend', saying there is nothing wrong in meeting and talking to anyone. He also advocates resolution of the Kashmir outside the ambit of UN resolutions.
Bilal Lone is elder brother of separatist-turned-mainstream politician Sajad Lone. He enjoys cordial terms with his brother and did not issue any statement over Sajad's decision of contesting polls and later joining the coalition government as a minister from the BJP quota.
