SRINAGAR, June 25: Panic gripped the people of Central and South Kashmir after the authorities sounded flood alert. The water level has already crossed danger mark and it continues to flow above danger mark at important places like Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh.
Although the water level at Sangam in river Jhelum started to recede on Thursday but it is still above the danger mark. The Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department officials said the water level at Sangam was recorded 27.05 feet and it was still above danger mark. The water level at Ram Munshi Bagh was 21.40 feet by the same time.
In the Srinagar district people living in the low-lying areas like Rajbagh, Padshahi Bagh, Kursoo, Mehjoor Nagar, Hamdaniya Colony and Bemina were so terrified that they could not sleep during the last night. The people are yet to come out of the shock suffered by them due to the September 2014 deluge.
Reports said that the water of the river Jhelum has entered some of the houses in the Gadhanzpora and Kursoo areas of the Srinagar district. Most of the people living in these areas have left for safer places and there are apprehensions that the flood water may enter some of the other localities in the vicinity.
Residents of Shivpora, Sonwar and Batwara are also thinking of moving to safer places. In the Lasjan area the people could be seen ferried in the tippers and there was chaos and confusion in this area. Same situation was prevalent in the Kursoo Padshahi Bagh and Mehjoor Nagar areas of the city.
Reports said that many diversions were washed away and hundreds of people were left homeless in Kulgam and Pulwama districts of South Kashmir. In Kulgam district due to heavy rains, the water level in Vaishaw and Kandow streams increased triggering flash floods. The flash floods washed away several diversions including vital Nehama Noorabad, Aridajan Damhal, Laisoo Damhal, Ashthal, Brazloo, Chamgund and Ari Gatun.
The Irrigation and Flood control Department had already asked people living near streams and Jhelum embankments to move to safer places. The flash floods wreaked havoc and damaged crops in the district. The residents of Kulgam said that all schools and colleges in the district were closed.
The situation in neighbouring Pulwama was no different and due to incessant rains, the water level in Romshi and other streams increased. The diversions at Chandargam in Tral area as well as at Mughal pora and Batagund were washed away due to flash floods. A diversion at Rahmoo was also washed away.
The flood water hampered movement of the traffic at Charsoo and Kigam near Awantipora along Srinagar-Jammu highway in the district. Reports said that flash floods damaged crops and orchards at Kakapora, Padgampora, Chursoo, Pampore, Ratnipora and Beighpora in the Pulwama district. A breach was reported from Sempora in Pampore.
Situation in Anantnag district of south Kashmir was grim as flood water inundated several localities and other villages. The flood water has entered at Mattan Chowk, Mehandi Kadal, Hanji Wara, Ashajipora, Aanchidora and Harnag. The flood water also entered few villages including Aadar and Hassanpora of Bijbehera outskirts in the district.
