Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 25: The protests that have been going on at the University of Kashmir over the past few against the arrest of a scholar turned uglier on Thursday as the security personnel resorted to aerial firing to bring the situation under control.
As per the sources, the students both male and female were holding peaceful protests in the campus to press for the release of a scholar namely Muzamil Farooq Dar of English department of the university. The security personnel deployed in strength there, gave air to tension resulting in the spontaneous clashes, said the sources.
Sources said that the trouble started as the female students were misbehaved by the security personnel fuelling the already burning situation in the campus. The students pelted stones on the security personnel who responded with the aerial firing and cane charge, said the sources. According to the sources, many students were injured in the cane charge.
As per the sources, the students who got irritated over the mis-behaviour of the security personnel also pelted stones on the office of the Vice Chancellor and on other offices in the administrative block bringing every activity to a standstill.
Sources said that the media fraternity was not allowed inside the campus, neither by the security personnel nor by the university security itself that had come there on a fact finding mission.
Sources further said that the female students who had taken part in the protests were not allowed to enter the hostel late in theWednesday evening which has further aggravated the situation. As according to the sources the aerial firing was repeated in the campus after a long gap of about 10 years.
In the similar kind of situation, as according to the sources, a student of Islamic Studies, namely Rafiq Shah was arrested some 10 years before. Sources said that since that time Rafiq is serving the jail term in the Tihar jail. Same could be the fate of Muzamil if he is not freed immediately, apprehended the sources.
Sensing trouble, the university authorities have decided to close the campus for academic activities till the 27th of this month with an intention that the situation does not escalate further.
The students of the university were on the path of agitation as they are demanding the immediate resignation of the Vice Chancellor when this report was filed.
In the meantime, a police spokesman said that it has arrested Muzammil Farooq son of Farooq Ahmad resident of Gandebagh Pulwama for his links with militants. He was wanted in a case under FIR No. 90 of Police Station Rajbagh.
"Today some students of the university disrupted class work in the campus and tried to mislead other students saying that Muzammil was arrested for opposing Yoga on Sunday which is totally baseless and false. Rounds of talks were held between KU administration and the protesting youth with an eye being kept on law and order by KU security wing and Proctorial wing," said the police spokesman.
The spokesman said that despite clarifications about the arrest and fervent requests to end the protest some trouble mongers among the students instigated the youth who became violent and started damaging University property.
"The students vandalized the campus property, broke window panes and doors and other furniture in administration block. They also hurled rocks and stones on buildings and KU security officials. Flashbang Stun shells were used to restore law and order in the campus. No injuries were reported," said the spokesman.
