Need for PDP & BJP to shut mouth on contentious issues | | | As if he had no other issue to touch upon the Deputy Chief Minister,Dr Nirmal Singh, has raked up yet another controversial issue by stating that the atmosphere was not conducive for lifting of the AFSPA.The Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh has ruled out repealing of Armed Forces Special Forces Act (AFSPA) in the state in immediate future and said that the Central government will have final say on the decision.Singh has said the situation in the valley is not conducive for revocation of AFSPA “at this juncture”. Though there are stray instances of militant attacks it does not mean there is no need for enforcing the AFSPA.He has said that the government will not compromise on national interest and that it will continue to take stern action against separatists and militants.Yes, he may be partly right because of late the coalition Government has initiated some firm measures which have prevented separatists in the Kashmir valley from derailing peace by inciting people to indulge in violence.Nirmal singh is not incorrect when he argues that the security scenario in the state, particularly in the Kashmir valley,is not conducive enough to warrant revocation of the AFSPA.In fact during the last over 100 days militants operating in the valley have become quite active and have opted for encounters with the security forces in which a number of Army and police personnel were killed. Besides these encounters militants have targeted security convoys and camps. In addition to this the infiltration bids by militants from across the LOC and the IB in the state have registered increase. But one does not seem it was proper for a BJP leader and that too of the rank of Deputy Chief Minister to comment on an issue which is quite controversial.Commenting on the issue could be a red rag for the PDP bull. Right from the days the PDP was in the opposition to the days it regained power in March last its leadership has been in favour of withdrawal of the AFSPA.In reality the Kashmir centric political parties, including the National Conference, besides the separatists, have voiced their resentment over the delay on the part of the central Government in revoking the AFSPA. These Kashmir centric political parties believe that as a result of AFSPA being in force security forces had the liberty in committing excesses. What is amazing is the way these Kashmir centric political leaders, including the separatists, keep their eyes shut whenever there are cases of excesses being committed by the militants. As far as Nirmal Singh’s contention regarding unsavoury security scenario is concerned one may not enter into any argument with him.During the last over three months separatists have managed to organize series of rallies where some of their supporters waved Pakistani flags and shouted anti-India slogans. In some rallies even the ISIS flags were waved as if conveying to the people that ISIS has been born in Kashmir when the ISIS is yet to take its birth. But it was not the occasion for the Deputy Chief Minister to talk about an issue which is treated as controversial as that of Article 370.Yes a newsman had approached Nirmal Singh and had asked a question relating to the minister’s views on the demand for revocation of the AFSPA.The Minister,to be precise the Deputy Chief Minister, should have not voiced any comment on the issue.Raking up controversial issues either by the BJP lead ers or by those belonging to the PDP has affected adversely the level of governance in the state. In reality from day one of the formation of the coalition Government the leaders of the two parties, that share power, keep on raising contentious issues which aggravates the level of ideological differences.. Let the Coordination Committee issue some do’s and don’ts for the leaders of the BJP and the PDP.Among the don’ts these leaders should be told to keep their mouth shut on issues related to Article 370,AFSPA,grant of citizenship rights to refugees from West Pakistan,on AIIMS,on return of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley on regional discrimination if the coalition Government has to produce results. |
