Kundan Kashmiri

Kashmir the land of
Kashyap, is hav
ing proud of being the “Seat of Sharda” which made possible to produce so many of intellectuals, knowledgeable persons, historians, linguistics, translators, astrologers, authors, artists and others in different philosophies and subjects. This seat of leaning have also produced different schools of fine arts like music, paintings, dance, sculpture, architecture from time to time. Outsiders were coming to this place with curiosity to know what new has come up in these fields. Lot of treasure of valuable literatures, books and manuscripts were attached to this pious seat of learning and outsiders were attracting to get these valuables along with to their states and countries through fair or foul means. The good number of well learned sages, saints, philosophers and scholars have visited this “Sharda Peeth” which include Adi-Shankaracharya who seated himself in the temple and composed “Panchstavi” in praise of goddess “Sharda”. Swami Nand Lai Ji also stayed in Sharda and had his own Dharmashala there.
It is unfortunate for all of us that while knowing that first phase and then closed it by and by through force. This resulted in culmination of Vedic studies and scriptures from the said pious seat of learning “the Sharda”. During the pre-partition days Sharda temple was guarded by Maharaja’s special Armed regiment in order to maintain its security and sanctity. It was repaired, renovated and also roof was erected over the temple on the instruction of Dogra ruler. It was in the Dogra rule itself this temple was re-opened for regular pilgrimage and it regained its fame of being great centre of pilgrimage for the Hindus of India. Sharda Pilgrimage used to be made till the year 1947, when the whole area was occupied by Pakistan. Kashmiri Pandits were regularly visiting and maintaining the pious temple till 1947 and even in the year 1948 when the PAK raiders entered in the Sharda temple at Shardi, muzaffrabad, one saint of K P community swami aftab Ram of Kupwara was present in meditation form. Most of the KP’s worship the said temple because this deity is their “Kul Devi”. Most of Saints, Sadhus, devotees and believers were coming there for meditation on the bank of “Sharda pond” where ritual of “Pind-Daan” was performed on Badar Lunar Ashtami. The Sharda pilgrims were usually going to this shrine through Drang, Ghusa, Gangavar, Dudinial alongwith sitalvan mountain pass and from dudinial pilgrims were proceeding to Teja-van. Next or third day, pilgrims cross the Krishna Ganga River and then move forward to “Sharda temple”. Finally they (pilgrims) were descending upon to the Bank of Madhumati to perform Shrad of their ancestors.
It is very sad to learn that the said pious temple of “Sharda Mata” which is in the clutches of Pakistan in POK is in dilapidated condition and pious springs of the area are not visible.
The treasure in respect of books, manuscripts and literature were lying there are missing, destroyed or burnt. The shrine turned into ruins about which no body from this side of Kashmir especially Hindus know in which condition this holy shrine is. Neither state nor centre Government took any initiative with pak government about renovation and repair of the shrine, so that at least it could be protected from further destruction. “Sharda-peeth” has a great affinity with the culture of Kashmiri Brahmins which needs attention of Indian as well as Pak Government for taking steps to take this shrine on the pattern of post glory in such a way so that scholars of the adjoining areas may come here as before achieving some thing new in the field of knowledge and wisdom on the modern scientific lines. To respect the religious sentiments of millions people of India in general and of Kashmiri Pandits in Particular govt of India must raise this issue with Pakistan through ministry of foreign affairs to ensure that Hindus be allowed to visit this pious shrine, Kashmiri pundits are allowed to maintain its sanctity and conduct its puja on regular basis. Opening of Sharda University in the state of J&K on priority also needs urgent attention of state and centre govternment Although Kashmiri Pandit Conference (KPC) under my leadership and leadership of C.L Gadoo  highlighted this demand of KP’s before president of India, Governor of J&K Home Minister  of India, Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha in the recent past. ”Let us  all pledge  to work together for restoration  of Sharda Mata from the clutches of  Pakistan”.
