Early Times Report

Jammu, July 20: Even as the new government has been repeatedly saying that it stood for equitable development of all the regions of the state, at least 17000 need based/causal workers of various departments including the PHE were denied wages on the occasion of eid. The new PDP-BJP coalition government has also not made any mention of regularisation of daily wagers and need-based workers in its "Agenda for Alliance" (Common Minimum Programme) - a document which is the 'guiding framework' for the government in Jammu and Kashmir for the next six years."We have not been paid salary for the past six months. There are ITI trained daily wagers, CP workers and casual workers who have not been paid wages for the past six months only in Jammu region . We are on the verge of starvation and even on the eve of Eid festival wages not paid to us and PHE department is not concerned about our sufferings," said Mohd Sajad Ganai , District President ITI trained PHE and CP workers Association. He added: "The government has made a mockery of the Wages Act and has never released our salary on festivals also which included Eid and Dewali." Tilak Raj, an ITI trained PHE daily wager, said: "There are about 17000 ITI trained daily wagers and casual workers in the Public Health Department. The daily wagers of the department are getting their salary, but not in time. The need-based and casual workers of Jammu region which included Rajouri , Poonch , Udhampur ,Kathua , Doda , Ramban , Kishtwar and Jammu are the worst sufferers of official indifference as many of them have not received their salary for the past one to eight years."Vinay Kumar , Ashfaq Ahmed Butt , Bhagat Singh , Shazad Ahmed Shah ,Maqbool Ahmed Poonchi , Chandan Singh and Sardar Manjeet Singh ITI trained PHE daily wagers and CP workers Association leaders , said, "It is unfortunate that the government is the least concerned about addressing the genuine issues of Jammu region workers. For them, Diwali, Holi, Eid and all other festivals hold no meaning as they do not have money to celebrate the occasions. They have been denied salary on one or the other pretext. We have decided to launch an agitation against the administration's indifference. "They alleged that on Eid festival wages were paid to Kashmir region workers where as Jammu region workers were totally ignored.
