Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 20: As the investigating agencies are busy finalizing the second list of the corrupt officials, who would be shown the exit door, a few officials who were re-employed or given extension by the erstwhile National Conference-Congress regime are hiding behind their chairs and are still reaping the fruits of power.
Sources told Early Times the General Administration Department (GAD) has not implemented Chief Minister's order to terminate the re-employed employees in letter and spirit. "Only a few selected people have been terminated while many others are still calling the shots," they added.
Pertinently, on March 17 this year Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had ordered termination of all the employees who were granted re-employment by various government departments.
The decision was taken "to rid the state from the scourge of nepotism and rejuvenate administration", an official spokesman had said.
The Chief Minister, the spokesman said, had issued these directions to restore the credibility of the administration so that it works in a fair and transparent manner.
Four months have passed since the day order to terminate the engagement of the retired officials was issued but till date government has not issued any statement about how many re-employed officials have been terminated.
The Education Minister and the government spokesman Naeem Akther sometime back had told reporters that "A few officials like Principal Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar Dr Rafiq Pampori cannot be replaced as it's difficult to find their substitutes."
Sources claimed that a few officials who were re-employed by the previous regime used their influence and persuaded their political bosses to let them continue. "Many officials are continuing due to them enjoying Ashirwad of top BJP ministers," they added.
A source said that "undue interference" of the BJP ministers in the administrative affairs has jeopardized the entire process of "cleaning the system and getting rid of the deadwood."
A critic while talking to Early Times said: "On one hand the government is claiming that it wants to get rid of the corrupt officials while on the other hand the retired officials are being encouraged and they are holding the top posts."
The critic said that its "unfortunate" that people around the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed are not interested in changing the system and want status-quo to continue. "The Chief Minister is fighting a tough battle. People around him are creating hurdles for him (Mufti) to change the system," the critic added.
He demanded that government should come up with a statement about how many retired officials who were re-engaged by the previous regime have been shown the exit door and how many of them are still working. "The Government maintaining silence over the issue is making people cast aspersions on the war against corruption, which is being spearheaded by none other than Chief Minister," the critic added.
A source said the people around Chief Minister are not providing him with the "correct feedback" and are trying to "mislead" him. "Influential are trying to protect the old horses and so far they have succeeded in their endeavor," the source added.
