Sheikh's grand daughter bats for Musharraf formula
Breaking status-quo

Early Times Report
jammu, July 20: Nyla Ali Khan, granddaughter of father and founder of National Conference Sheikh Abdullah and a visiting professor at the University of Oklahoma has batted for the former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf's 4-point Jammu & Kashmir formula, saying it should be considered for breaking the status-quo in the state.
"Musharraf's four-point formula would have made a big difference if these were followed seriously and sincerely by the governments of both India and Pakistan. I don't see Musharraf's four-point formula as an end in itself, but it would have helped in slowly building confidence in Jammu & Kashmir and in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (read PoJK). Then we could have gone forward to discuss the right of self-determination," she said in interview with a magazine. Musharraf's 4-point formula means restoration of autonomy, demilitarization/phased withdrawal of the army from the state, India-Pakistan joint control and joint mechanism.
She asserted that if the status-quo in Jammu & Kashmir is to be broken, the Kashmiri leadership has to turn somewhat flexible. "When you say it is either my way or the highway - either it is referendum or nothing - then the Government of India says it is nothing, and you end up legitimizing the status-quo by holding on to a rigid position. So compromise and political accommodation are necessary for resolving Kashmir issue," she was quoted as saying. "Rigid positions (on Kashmir) only led to playing into the hands of governments of India and Pakistan," she also said during the interview.
Nyla Ali Khan, in addition, said that she still considered the otherwise archaic and redundant UN resolutions on Jammu & Kashmir relevant, but opined that the time was not yet ripe for insisting on implementation of the UN resolutions. Endorsing the UN resolutions on the state, she said: The Shimla Accord (of 1972) has made the Kashmir issue a bilateral one between Indian and Pakistan and…marginalized the role of the United Nations. But I don't think we should begin with those (UN Resolutions). I don't think we should say it is either UN resolutions or nothing at all. Kashmir is conflict zone and there is no doubt about that. Generation of ours has been wiped out for all intended purposes".
Significantly, she used the opportunity to lambaste the present NC leadership and said it has lost the way. Describing the National Conference as the only indigenous political organization in the state, she said: "The party has historically played an active role in the political and economic emancipation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. But after 1982, the NC as a political organization (and its ideology) became diluted. And after 1989 in particular, its image as a symbol of Kashmiri nationalism and as a legitimate voice of the political aspirations of the people of J&K, diminished. I think the lack of accessibility within the organization and the lack of connect with the people and the inability to feel the pulse of the masses besides the politics of appeasement vis-à-vis national political organizations has been damaging". It is clear that she targeted Farooq Abdullah and his son and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
This non-resident Indian is living in a fool's paradise. She doesn't know anything about the nature of Jammu & Kashmir State, its peculiar demographic profile and the nature of contradictions in the political perceptions of the people inhabiting Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. It is not a homogeneous state; it's highly diverse with an overwhelming majority of people religiously committed to India and opposed to such mischievous and sinister concepts like greater autonomy, self-rule, azadi and so on. Those who are involved in the anti-India activities in Kashmir are a minority and the Indian nation cannot allow the minority to impose its atrocious will on the majority. She should remember that the Indian nation is different from the Indian State which has been fighting against itself since decades now but has not been able to drive Jammu & Kashmir out of India because of the intense pressure from below. Jammu & Kashmir was an integral part of Indian civilization and it shall ever remain so as the people of Jammu and Ladakh are there in their lakhs, besides other patriotic sections like Kashmiri Pandits, to defeat the evil game plan of the seditionists in the Valley.
