Jammu intellectuals to discuss implications of BJP's J&K policy

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policy vis-a-vis Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir has alarmed and frightened the nationalists in the State. Its policy has created a sense of insecurity among them to the extent that they have started expressing the view that "if they remained dormant and devoid of political activity anymore, the entire State would be sub-merged under the rising tide of Kashmiri Muslim sub-nationalism and the plight of the non-Muslims in Jammu province, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Christians included, would be no different from that of the persecuted and hounded out Kashmiri Hindus".
"The Jammu province may witness the 1990-like situation that forced the hapless miniscule minority of Kashmiri Hindus to quit their homes and hearths and become refugees in their own motherland," they have started saying during their private meetings and conversations. What has added to their worry, which appears quite genuine, is the dramatic shift in the attitude of the local BJP leadership towards the nationalists in J&K. They are saying that "the BJP has lost its moorings and deviated from the path chartered by such stalwarts as Shyama Prasad Mookerjee and that it has become part of the scheme that is basically designed to drive J&K out of India".
They are also expressing the view that the "BJP could go to any extent to further appease Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists and communalists, as it shared the view that Kashmir has become a 'headache for India' and that if India is to prosper, some 'settlement over Kashmir' has to be reached with Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists".
Their refrain is that "the Narendra Modi Government may endorse the Musharraf's Kashmir formula as a first step towards final resolution of Kashmir". Their belief has stemmed from the hush hush manner in which the South Block is cultivating Pakistan and in which the back channels have become very active". "The manner in which the Government of India is pampering Pakistan even after the January 2 terror attack on the India's most strategic Pathankot Air Base has strengthened our belief that New Delhi's intentions are not pious" is their view. Media reports from Pakistan and what the Pakistani participants in the Indian news channels' debates on Indo-Pak relations reveal and say have further suggested that "talks between India and Pakistan are going on behind the curtain". Media reports in Pakistan and Pakistani-think tanks are, in fact, appreciating the Indian Prime Minister and the Indian External Affairs Minister and saying that "their attitude is very positive and accommodating" and that "they are expecting a major breakthrough".
It's no wonder that an impression has gained ground among the nationalists in J&K that "an influential group of mercenaries has become quite active in New Delhi and it has come to believe that now is the proper time to strike and persuade Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his team of advisors to take some 'bold' decision on J&K to end the Indo-Pak conflict and win over the alienated Kashmiri Muslims".
Convinced that New Delhi could play a mischief and through in the lot of the very vast nationalist constituency in the State with Pakistan or with Kashmiri separatists, many Jammu intellectuals have joined hands to avert what they call the "impending disaster". They have decided to hold "an important meeting in Jammu in the next few days to discuss the dangerous ramifications of the New Delhi's policy vis-a-vis Pakistan and J&K and chalk out a programme aimed at thwarting the all evil designs". "Yes, we are holding a meeting of Jammu intellectuals to discuss the BJP's Kashmir and Pakistan policy and its dangerous ramifications for the nationalists in the State and for the country. We will not allow the mergence of Lahore-like situation or the Kashmir-like situation in Jammu," confided two sophisticated Jammu intellectuals, who have been quite active for more than two decades.
That the Jammu intellectuals have decided to come forward and educate public opinion about the New Delhi's Pakistan and Kashmir policy could be construed as a major slap on the Jammu's political class as well as a major nationalist initiative. It would be interesting to see the outcome of this new initiative in Jammu.
