Dismal performance of Horticulture deptt in Doda

Jammu, Apr 24: Aiming to provide facilities to fruits growers and farmers at their door steps, the government had sanctioned crores of rupees for establishing fruit and vegetable market in Peryote (Doda) but the lackadaisical approach of Horticulture department the construction work of market is still in progress and only 40 percent work completed after lapse of five years.
Sources in department concerned informed Early Times that state government in the year 2012-13 had sanctioned six fruit and vegetable markets for various districts of Jammu division out of which three markets including Udhampur, Kathua and Akhnoor are already functioning, while rest including Doda are still craving for official attention depriving the needy farmers, growers of ease of doing business.
"Same year department had acquired 20 kanal land for Doda market but for close to two years, construction work of the project was not initiated by department for reason best known to its bosses", sources said, adding that total cost of the market is Rs. 5.50 crore but the department till date had utilized Rs. 1.50 crore in which they constructed the approach road to the market, Auction Platform and Drainage.
They further said that slow pace of work is depriving the growers from benefits which the previous government had committed to provide to growers at door steps. "The slow pace of work is affecting the fruits growers, farmers living in far-flung area of the district and also forcing them to sell their produce to the commission agent which are sitting in Udhampur or Jammu markets", they said.
Chief Horticulture Officer, Doda said that due to delay in release of funds, the construction work of the project was started by department in the year 2014-15. The project was funded by NABARD and till date we have received one instalment and hope that this season department will be open market for fruit and vegetable growers.
