Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 24: NC president Farooq Abdullah's recent Ananatnag statement that Kashmiri Muslims love Pakistan and they will continue to love it even if New Delhi announces more financial packages for them has not gone well even with Kashmiri people.
On April 12, while talking to party workers in the Khannabal area of Ananatnag district, Farooq Abdullah had said: "Kashmiris love Pakistan and economic packages are not going to change that. India has spent a lot of money in Kashmir but they have not been able to take out Pakistan from the hearts of Kashmiri people. People in Delhi complain that Kashmiri people, despite so many economic packages, keep loving Pakistan. I tell them Kashmiris will take the money and still keep following their heart".
Reacting to the Farooq Abdullah's statement, noted Kashmiri intellectual and academician, MY Ganai, said there was none in Kashmir who was prepared to buy his rhetoric. "While making such speeches the NC President is unfortunately taking the Kashmiris for granted. Dr. Abdullah while issuing such statements is perhaps missing an important point that such rhetoric could perhaps sell in the Kashmir of 1950's, 1960's and at the most till 1970's and 1980's when the people were educationally very backward. But, by now it is the 2nd decade of 21st century and such statements can hardly find takers" in Kashmir.
Further lambasting Farooq Abdullah and his outfit and its dual policy, Ganai said: "The NC has an old tradition of issuing such emotional statements against the New Delhi when it is out of power. Let me ask Dr. Abdullah that if he knew that Kashmiris love Pakistan then why while in power he used to recommend the bombardment of that country. And if he blames New Delhi for denuding the state in case of its resources, then why did he forget that it was during his times as Chief Minister that NHPC took away our water resources". He asserted that by issuing such statements, the NC President "does nothing but make himself a laughing stock".
Ganai only hit the nail on the head by saying what he said about Farooq Abdullah and his out-on-the-limb NC, which has been leaving no stone unturned to fish in the troubled waters in Kashmir and create additional difficulties for Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. Indeed, the NC has a long history of double-speak. It has never ever cared for ideology it used to say it professed and it has changed sides in the past several times in no time. It used to dismiss the BJP as a communal party, but it shared power with it when Vajpayee was at the helm. It shared power with the same Congress which it considered the real culprit as far as the erosion of the state's special status was concerned. Besides, when in power, Farooq Abdullah on occasions batted for a pro-active policy and urged New Delhi to destroy Pakistan by bombarding it.
Ganai is right when he says that today's Kashmir is not the Kashmir which it used to be before the 1970s. Today's Kashmir is a different ball game. Today's it is totally radicalized, as Pakistan has invested much more in the Valley after the 1970s. Farooq Abdullah and his NC have to come out with a new narrative if they really wish to win back the trust of Kashmiri Muslims. They should also remember that they are dealing with Mehbooba Mufti, who has established a good rapport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi whose dispensation is implementing the PDP's agenda step by step. The order to the Army to vacate strategic Army camps in Srinagar, Anantnag, Kargil and Jammu before March 31; dismantling of many bunkers in the Valley, including Handwara; appointment of a committee charged with the responsibility of identifying places from where the AFSPA could be revoked; and the Prime Minister's Katra solemn commitment that he would resolve the Kashmir issue within the ambit of "Kashmiriyat" are only a few instances which serve to show that Mehbooba Mufti has been able to achieve no Kashmiri leader could ever imagine.
The fact of the matter is that Farooq Abdullah is beating about the bush and he has nothing in his scheme of things which the Kashmiri Muslims will buy.
