Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 24: Appointment of Rangeel Singh as the second-in-command in the ruling People's Democratic Party is seen as a fine balancing act by the PDP Chief and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to send a message to PDP activists in Jammu that they are as important as Kashmiri leadership both in the party and the Government. It is ironical that Rangeel Singh, the senior most leader in the party after late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who commanded respect in the political circles of the state across party affiliations for his clean political image and un-blotted track record got the space in his party that he deserved only after latter's demise. Meanwhile, his appointment as the vice president of the party is seen more as the attempt by the PDP to give representation to Jammu region and assuage the feeling of neglect brewing within the party's Jammu unit which had negligible participation in party's decision making and representation in the Government in both the innings of PDP-BJP coalition. "PDP leadership was under pressure from within the party's Jammu unit to give due representation to it and appointment of Rangeel Singh as party's second in command has been result of this" said an office bearer of the party's Jammu wing. "Though Late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed always advocated regional equity and strongly advocated inclusive politics, it is a pity that there was no representation for close to 50 lakh Hindu population in the party or in the Government in PDP's quota" he added; "On the contrary, BJP accommodated Abdul Gani Kohli and separatist tuned mainstream politician Sajjad Lone into Council of Ministers on its quota" he added further. Sources in the party disclosed that aware of the brewing resentment in Jammu over lack of adequate representation in party and Government, Mehbooba Mufti wanted to allocate at least one berth in her Council of Ministers to a Jammu based Hindu/Sikh leader, but the move was scuttled by a lobby within the party led by a party parliamentarian. "Inclusion of a representative from Hindu/Sikh community in the Cabinet would have given party a greater acceptability in Jammu region and helped it shun the tag of being only a Kashmiri party" said another party leader.
