'NC must identify divisive forces'
Threat to unity from whom?

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 24: The Central Working Committee (CWC) of Kashmir-based National Conference (NC) on Saturday again demanded semi-independence from India, saying greater autonomy was the only lasting solution to the Kashmir issue, and pitched for continuous dialogue with Pakistan. Actually, it passed a resolution in Jammu on autonomy and Indo-Pak dialogue. By autonomy, the NC means a limited accession of J&K with India - a step short of complete independence - and further consolidation of Kashmiri hold over Jammu and Ladakh.
What the CWC said about these two issues need no further elucidation, as the Early Times in these columns has several times commented on the dangerous ramifications of its stand on autonomy and Pakistan. Suffice to say that the people of the state rejected outright its demand in 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. The NC could not win a single Lok Sabha seat and its tally came down to just 15, as against its tally of 28 in 2008. That even Farooq Abdullah had to bite dust or suffer a massive defeat at the hands of PDP's Tariq Hamid Karra only suggested that the Abdullah dynasty had become irrelevant even in Kashmir.
However, what must draw the attention of the readers of Early Times is what another CWC resolution said about threat to the unity of the state. While explaining its perverted stand on upholding what it called the "pluralistic and secular ethos" of Jammu and Kashmir, the resolution said that "divisive forces were hell-bent upon dividing the state on regional and religious lines".
It was a vague resolution, as it didn't identify the divisive forces. At the same time, it didn't utter a word against Kashmiri secessionists, who had been vitiating the whole atmosphere in the state with the minorities vehemently opposing them and seeking a solution that links their fate with New Delhi, notwithstanding the fact that the custodians of the Indian State never appreciated their sentiments, urges and needs.
The fact that the CWC resolution gave a clean chit to the merchants of death and destruction in Kashmir only suggest that the NC considered the minorities in Jammu province and Ladakh divisive and a threat to the "pluralistic and secular ethos", as they stand for the unity and integrity of India as well as their complete merger with India and oppose such demands as autonomy, self-rule, merger with Pakistan or azadi.
The resolution should have reflected on the today's Kashmir's demographic profile and expulsion of the miniscule minority of Kashmiri Hindus from the Valley in 1990 and expulsion of 2000 non-local NIT Srinagar students from Srinagar on April 11 and 12. It should have also hailed the people of Jammu region for the simple reason that the most of the expelled Kashmiri Hindu families made liberal and accommodating Jammu their abode and the expelled NIT students found Jammu the most suitable for the setting up of NIT or setting up of an extension centre. But more than that, the NC should have commended the suffering people of Jammu region for the reason that hundreds of Kashmiri Muslims have constructed huge bungalows and many Kashmiri Muslims have established huge business establishments in Jammu.
The NC must identify the divisive forces or it must admit that threat to the unity of J&K is from Kashmiri secessionists and not from the liberal Jammu.
