Early Times Report

Udhampur, May 15: Hundreds of dead fish washed up on shores of local nallahs at Battal balian .Dudhar nallah and Barrian in udhampur district due to excessive water pollution allegedly discharged from some industrial units at local Batal Ballian industrial area .
The oxygen level in the local nalhas has reached subnormal level due to a large amount of industry waste and domestic sewage being discharged into it. According to reports more than four tones of fish died due to poisonous sewages discharged directly or indirectly into these rivers from local industrial units two days back without any treatment. Troubled locals blamed the unregulated release of chemicals into the river for taking a toll on aquatic life. "These fish died suddenly. They are dying because of chemicals released by the nearby factories," said a resident. However, officials said the reason behind the river getting polluted is uncertain.
According to inspector fishery department Rakesh Paba and Gourav Gandotra a proper investigation will be done to determine the cause behind the river getting polluted but primarily it seems the chemical discharge from local industrial units . He added that . We will examine if the reason is chemical waste from factories or something else. The district officer pollution control board udhampur when contacted by media said that till date he has not received any such information whenever I will receive such complaint we will act as per law . Mass death of fish around the Battal ballain nallah is not new. Similar incidents have been reported in past also when some animals also died
Meanwhile local ajay mahajan leader of bajrang daal has said that fishes died due to due to poisonous waste thrown by local factories two days back when it was raining in the area . he added that earlier such incidents had occurred due to irresponsible behavior of these factories . He added that business of majority of poor people who are involved in fish business is adversely effected . He demanded inquiry into entire incident so that erring factory owners could be brought in to books .
