Batting for semi-independence

Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 15: Convinced that his NC has lost its credibility, appeal and sheen and that the common Kashmiri Muslims have no faith in it, the party president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday raised his hands and appealed to the Kashmir-based legal fraternity to come forward to preserve the state's special status by defeating the game plan of the PDP, which, according to him, is dancing to the tune of New Delhi to remain in power.
"There are clear indications that a long existing lobby in New Delhi is reinventing its mission to erode what remains of the state's internal autonomy…Today we see the efforts of this lobby in the form of the extension of National Food Security Act to the state while the PDP-BJP government is peddling an industrial policy which is glaringly conspicuous in its ambiguity on the question of non-state subject investors and promoters. What others did between 1953 and 1975, the PDP is following suit and re-enacting the same master-servant opportunistic relationship that has wrecked havoc with our state," he, among other things, said in Srinagar while addressing a conclave of lawyers in Srinagar.
He, in fact, accused the PDP of betraying the cause of Kashmiri Muslims and sought to create an impression that the PDP's rise to power in the state has only harmed the Kashmiri Muslims and their cause. Not only this, he also blamed New Delhi for fracturing the Kashmir polity by floating the PDP with the objective of bringing J&K closer to India politically and constitutionally than ever before. In other words, Farooq Abdullah pitched for the state's semi-independence and termed the extensions of the central laws as steps taken to cripple Article 370 of the Indian Constitution and absorb the Kashmiri Muslims in the Hindu milieu.
It would not be out of place to mention here that his accusation against the PDP were untenable, as his own father and he himself allowed the extension of almost 20 central laws to the state between 1975 and 1990. As for the PDP, it has held its ground firmly with the BJP extending to it the fullest possible support. Take, for example, the imposition of 12.5 per cent jaziya, firing of two law officers belong to the BJP-RSS combine on the issue of cow killing and beef eating; dismantling of army camps in Handwara; order to army to vacate the strategically located camps in Srinagar, Anantnag, Kargil and Jammu; BJP's support to the PDP on the issues of NIT Srinagar, National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET), new industrial policy and National Food Security Act; to mention only a few.
The fact of the matter is that what the PDP has achieved during the past 14 months or so could be described as its great success.
The appeal of Farooq Abdullah to the legal fraternity that it was its fundamental duty to fight out the PDP and its pro-New Delhi policies only shows that he and his party are just incapable of leading the Kashmiri Muslims and that they are in search of a block that could help them save their sinking ship. But gone are the days when the people of the Kashmir Valley would pin their faith in the party of the Abdullahs and return them to power with a huge mandate. Things have changed in the Valley and very drastically. This can be seen from his own humiliating defeat as also from the NC's three consecutive ignominious defeats in 2002, 2008 and 2014. In 2002 and 2008, the NC could win only 28 seats each and in 2014, only 15 seats. The most striking aspect what that in 2014, the NC could get only about 11 per cent of the total votes polled.
It would be no exaggeration if someone may says that Farooq Abdullah has accepted his defeat by appealing to the Kashmiri legal fraternity. But more than that, it will also be in the fitness of things if someone says that the NC is not even a party of Kashmir.
