Early Times Report

Jammu, June 26: A day after Pakistan based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) claimed responsibility for attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy near Pampore on Jammu-Srinagar highway, the Centre on Sunday decided to set up a two member committee to find out the loopholes which led to the killing of eight CRPF men and 22 others sustaining injuries.
Sources told Early Times the 2-member committee would be arriving in Srinagar within a few days and would hold meetings with the officials of the police and paramilitary forces to discuss the possible measures which could be taken prevent such attacks in future.
Its in place to mention here that Saturday`s attack was the fourth one on the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir this month. At least 17 security personnel were killed and several others injured in the last three major strikes along the Jammu-Srinagar highway during the period.
The attack has evoked widespread condemnation with the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti leading from the front and describing it as a desperate attempt to vitiate peace in the holy month of Ramadan.
Sources told Early Times that Saturday's attack on the CRPF convoy has put the security agencies on toes and they have decided to take up the contentious issues with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Defence ministry. "On the name of demilitarization many bunkers from the strategic locations have been dismantled. This has allowed militants to target and ambush the security forces freely. The need of the hour is to increase the number of mobile bunkers in the volatile areas so that a constant vigil is maintained to foil the nefarious designs of the Pakistan sponsored militants," said a source.
He said, 'Political parties playing politics over demilitarization and other important security aspects which had allowed security agencies to have an upper hand has disturbed the balance."
Even the police have admitted that the sudden increase in incidents of militancy related violence has been the result of increase in ingress of militants. Authorities claim that more than 250 militants are active in Kashmir when their number was 150 a month ago.
Sources said, "Number of infiltration bids have increased manifolds this year and more than 20 militants have been killed near the Line of Control in the recent past. There are scores of militants waiting at the launching pads in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and they are waiting for a chance to infiltrate into the Valley."
They said, "Despite Army having a robust counter-infiltration grid at place many militants have managed to sneak into Kashmir and with the help of local militants they are carrying out the deadly attacks. This trend is worrisome and central government has to take concrete steps to put an end to this proxy war which India has been fighting for the past 26-years.
