Early Times Report

Rajouri, Aug 24: Even after several campaigns launched by the Rajouri Municipal Committee under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA), the city presents a "dirty look" as failure of the municipal bodies and poor civic sense among people has turned the border district Rajouri into a huge garbage dump with garbage littered all around.
For majority of locals especially from Rajouri town (district Headquarter) the Prime Minster's Swatch Bharat Abhiyan which was launched with much fanfare is nowhere in sight as heaps garbage can be seen at every corner of the city.
As there is no provision for the dumping of solid waste ,Rajouri Municipality without any fail creating an environmental disaster by dumping solid waste in the Rajouri river and at vulnerable places like new & old bus stands, near schools, hospital and at public places.
"Opposite to new bus stand, Municipal Committee (MC) employees have been throwing tons of solid waste collected from various localities of the town in the local river, local resented.
"After dumping the solid waste at this point MC employees either put the garbage on fire or dump garbage in the river which leads to the death of aquatic animals and also putting the lives of hundreds of people in danger who consume river water in the downstream areas" said a official of the Fisheries Department on anonymity.
He added the continuous process of dumping the solid waste in the river will not only pollute the river besides causing death of aquatic animals but also may become a reason for outbreak of water borne diseases in areas falling along downstream.
"Despite several complaints lodged with the in-charge district pollution board and district administration nothing has been done in this matter till today, said a social activists Yog Raj Sharma.
He said, "When it comes to cleanliness, which exposes poor planning and lack of interest shown by the government bodies to coordinate their efforts to involve people in sanitation and take strict action against those who violate cleanliness rules."
"Continuous dumping of garbage at the banks of Rajouri river by MC is very disturbing and signal for a larger problem. Dumping untreated garbage on the river side is serious issues as hundreds of people down the river use water for drinking" said Junior Environmental Engineer.
Meanwhile Executive Officer, Municipal Committee Rajouri said that for the last many years the department has been looking for a suitable place to dispose the solid waste and recently three places have been identified and the report in this regard too has been submitted to higher authorities.
In-charge Pollution Control Board said, "Places identified to dispose sold waste by the MC have been rejected because of fragile ecology, human habitations in the vicinity and threat to air, soil and water." He added that several notices have been served to the Rajouri Municipal officials but nothing has been done in this matter so far.
Several social activists of the town have also accused the Fisheries department officials for their negligence in monitoring the rivers and such anti-environment activities.
Not only the Municipality workers dumping the garbage on the river side but also burning it in the dumpsters leading to air pollution and open land fill sites produce toxic chemicals.
Whatever the authorities say or shift blames but heaps of garbage, stagnant water and chocked drains in every part of the city tell a tale of neglect and indifferent attitude of the authorities and residents, who dump the waste on roads without giving any consideration to the affect on the image of the city.
