Living 50 mt from CM's residence, 700 families get filthy water | So near, yet so far | | Avinash Azad
Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 3: They live barely 50 meters away from Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's residence but are forced to drink filthy water. The 700 families have been left to fend for themselves after some water pipes were damaged nearly two years ago. The residents of the colony say that supply lines of some influential people have been changed, but the department has adopted pick and choose policy to change the line. "Several people are getting water from Church line, while others are forced to use the filthy water", locals said, adding that a pipeline laid a decade ago got damaged long back. "Nearly one and half year ago, we approached JMC and PHE department and requested for new water supply lines in the colony", the reisdents said, adding that their efforts proved futile. "Since the all major pipe lines have damaged, water with filth from drains is being supplied to us", they said. "Pine lines for influential people including hoteliers, bureaucrats and politicians are being carefully maintained by the department", they said, adding that a particular community is deliberately being ignored. But Executive Engineer PHE City-I Division, V K Kundal, said that the residents are not supporting the department to change the supply lines. "To change water supply lines, we need to dig up the streets, and our teams have visited various lanes in the colony. But due to objection of people we are unable to dig-up street", he said, adding that however at several places new lines have been laid. "Tomorrow (Sunday) a team is already scheduled to visit the area. If things go well, new lines would be laid soon. We have assured the people after completion of work, street will be repaired", he said. |
