Jammu, Sept 3: Meant to promote and nurture sports in schools, the department of Youth Services and Sports is doing biggest disservice to the promising players with bunch of incompetent and visionless officials misinterpreting rules to extend undue favours to the blue eyed at the cost of deserving young players who aspire to represent the state in the national school games in various disciplines.
For more than four decades, the department of youth services and sports has been conducting interschool games at the district, province and state level in manner that spells absolute bankruptcy, utter lack of accountability and complete policy paralysis within the department. The department has no coordination with the schools, has no infrastructure of its own to conduct any competitions, no logistics and qualified man power and no will and vision in its officers to identify and handle budding talent. The competitions organized by the department are cruel joke with the players and their parents who aspire for a career in sports for their wards.
Recently, the department conducted district and province level competitions in Jammu with grave lack of professional ethics. The criminal unprofessionalism with which these tournaments were conducted can be gauged from the fact that the players were made to play in scorching sun with mercury hovering close to 40 degrees mark and humidity much beyond the limits of inconvenience. Astoundingly, the tournaments were finished in two days, with deserving players deliberately kept out on frivolous contexts. Many a schools which had fairly good teams were denied opportunities to play by misinterpreting the rules. "The said school has not deposited the games fund and hence its players cannot be considered" said an official, delegated the responsibility of conducting the competition. The officials little realized that the players who were being denied opportunity to play had actually deposited the games fund at the time of their admission and hence did not deserve to be punished. However, rather than pressing upon the schools to deposit the games fund before the start of competitions, the Department wickedly denied the opportunity to the players, in an obvious bid to accommodate blue eyed in place of the deserving in the state team.
A parent of a deserving player who had represented the state in several nationals squarely accused the district officer Jammu of complete organizational failure. "There has been no correspondence from him to the concerned schools and just as the teams reported for the matches, they were told that since the sports fee was not deposited by their schools, they could not play" Said Pawan Sharma. "The principal of the school has shown me the cheque which was to be deposited in the district office in the next few days, but who shall make up for the loss to my son due to denial of opportunity to represent the state, which he thoroughly deserved?" he questioned.
Meanwhile, ET learnt that there is a mafia working within the department which selects undeserving players in the state teams for pecuniary benefits as a certificate of participation the school games makes one eligible for sports quota under SRO 349. |
