Separatists in catch-22 situation
9/3/2016 11:30:13 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 3: Pressure is mounting on the reluctant and hardline separatists to hold talks with the All-Party Delegation (APD) which is visiting the Valley on Sunday.
But the separatists are caught in a catch-22 situation. The separatists, who have been issuing calendar of hartals and attacking the security camps, have been invited by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to hold talks with the APD, which also comprises of leaders from the Left parties, who have a soft corner approach on Kashmir.
The CM who has been accused by the separatists of running the state with an iron hand had set the ball rolling by writing to them and has in fact put the onus on the separatists for return of peace in the Valley.
"The separatists will now have to choose between their handlers in Pakistan and Kashmiris who they assume to represent. If they spurn the offer, then they will be discredited and if they accept it their handlers across the border will be fumed. It's for them to decide, but public pressure is mounting on them already," said a top official of the home Ministry.
Sources said that there is also a possibility that some leaders especially from the Left may meet the separatists in their personal capacity, but even in that eventuality there will not be any media event like it happened in 2010.
"One thing is clear-the separatists will not be allowed to call the shots and this is becoming increasingly clear. They are looking for option of manufactured media event but that we won't allow. They can't be allowed to demean India in any manner in front of the politicians and media," said the official.
The people in Kashmir are becoming increasingly wary of prolonged strikes and they have started blaming the stone pelters for the violence.
The people are taking to social media to vent out their anger against the stone pelters and separatists, and analysts believe it's sign of the situation there and eventually signaling that separatists no longer can take people for a ride.
