Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 14: A sadhu from Uttrakhand who had come for Amarnath Yatra this year did not come back even after the culmination of pilgrimage on 18 August. It was early this month when some of his followers back in Jammu accessed the Police Control Room Srinagar where they found he was no more. There was no word from the authorities as to the cause of his death nor did the Amarnath Shrine Board give any clear information about his case.
Shri Amarnath Yatra Shrine Board may well claim to have this year's annual pilgrimage culminated smoothly, barring some incidents which forced it to halt the Yatra due to unrest. Nevertheless, there is flip side to its elaborate arrangements in terms of not managing the death count and the account of incidents that result in death properly during the Yatra. In this case of Sadhu named Shankar Giri Maharaj , no body knew about his death for many days until one his followers enquired from various quarters and eventually found out that he had received grievous injuries due to some accident in Pahalgam after which he remained admitted in Soura Medical Institute but succumbed to injuries.
While the Police authorities gave information about his death, there is no clear word as to whether he met with any road accident or became victim of stone pelters, one of his follower said. Moreover, no body gave any information as to where and who performed his last rites, he said adding that had there been a proper system or an arrangement of giving pics of those (particularly sadhus who do not have families) who die during Yatra, the followers could have gone to Srinagar and performed his last rites.
The followers also lament that notwithstanding its elaborate arrangements on almost all fronts, there is a lapse in not keeping proper system for identification purpose on the website nor do they give any such pics to prominent newspapers in the state.
Even as many such Sadhus, unrecognized and unidentified, die every year during the Yatra, for Shankar Giri Maharaj pilgrimage was not for the first time .According to his followers in Jammu he had been performing Yatra for the last 30 years and every year he would come back with a rejuvenated spiritual bliss. This year too he had promised them he would be back in the same spirit, but could not keep his word. The followers are however regretting the fact they remained unaware of his death for many days and do not know under what circumstances his last rites were performed.
