Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 19: Two days after Syed Ali Geelani warned banks to stop their operations, the Valley is feeling cash crunch, with the people slamming separatists for adding to their miseries.
Geelani in his statement castigated few branches of the J&K Bank over remaining open and functioning in a routine course. One of the branches of the bank namely MA Road was mentioned in Geelani's press release.
On Monday, the MA Road branch was closed. The gates were sealed and no employee entered inside the premises. The people who came for cash transfer and withdrawal had to return disappointed.
The closure of the banks in Valley has been castigated by one and all here, with the people terming such a measure tantamount to pushing masses towards the wall. People in general were all day up in arms against both Geelani and the JK Bank authorities for leaving them in lurch.
There were scores of people hailing from different areas who had come to transfer cash at the lone JK Bank branch that till date was open. However, after finding the gates closed due to Geelani's threat, several broke down amid screams.
"I haven't earned a single penny since unrest began in Valley. I had few hundred rupees left in my account that I wanted to withdraw. Believe me I have nothing left at home," said a man while standing in front of the closed door of the bank. He added that even tyrant rulers in history haven't taken such measures which are at present being taken by the separatists. "It is now clear that they want people to starve and suffer. They don't want vendors, labourers to earn their livelihood; they don't want banks to give money to its customers."
Others seconded his views, saying in unison that in a bid to appease their bosses in Pakistan, the separatists have unleashed terror by their diktats.
"My daughter studies in Bangalore. She needs money to pay her fee and rent. After much difficulty I managed to reach here. I had heard that only this branch of JK Bank is open, but this too has been shut," said Abdul Majeed, a north Kashmir resident.
For Abdul Rahman, a class- IV employee working in PHE, said that closure of banks has left him without salary for two months. "I have the salary of August in my account. It hasn't been withdrawn. My family is in distress but who will tell this to Geelani who has become our new dictator and ordered the closure of all banks? Tell me where would we go and what would we eat," Rahman said.
People also castigated the separatists over making people to starve. They said the recent protest calendar indicates that the separatists do not bother about the hardships being faced by the people at large in Kashmir. What they want is to keep the pot boiling.
