Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 19: Shocked at the deadliest attack on Army brigade headquarter in Uri area of frontier Kashmir where at least 17 jawans were killed and another 19 wounded on Sunday, the Central Government is contemplating "surgical strikes" on terror camps in Muzaffarbad area of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, Early Times learnt from highly placed sources.
The sources said the Central Government has started discussing the matter threadbare with defence strategists, whereas Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally monitoring every development to decide future course of action, aimed to "bring end to terror strikes on India land."
Sources said the initiative for military intervention has come from the Army with its top brass having called for "limited but punitive action against Pakistan" as Jawans strongly believe "enough is enough".
Sources said the Jammu and Kashmir government was being taken into confidence about any such possible strike and to seek preparedness on their part.
It was learnt that the meeting chaired by Governor NN Vohra here last evening to discuss situation in the wake of Uri attack, hinted at "military intervention" to ensure security and sovereignty of the country.
The Peoples Democratic Party-led government is understood to have extended full support for any such endeavor while Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti while condemning Uri attack already said it can trigger "war like" situation.
Think tanks have already intensified lobbying that New Delhi should launch an offensive while many patriots who took to social media under hashtag #UriAttack have sought a military intervention.
Four commando-style gunmen, armed with AK-47 assault rifles and grenades, stormed into the brigade headquarters in Uri at 5:30 a.m. and were killed after a three-hour gunfight, a senior army officer said.
Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh told reporters in New Delhi that September 18 attack bore the hallmarks of Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed. Evidence gathered at the scene indicated the attackers were foreign and their equipment bore Pakistani markings, he added.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned what he called the "cowardly terror attack".
"I assure the nation that those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished," Modi said in a series of Twitter posts.
In an even stronger response, Home Minister, Rajnath Singh tweeted: "Pakistan is a terrorist state and should be identified and isolated as such."
Singh, the Home Minister, chaired a crisis meeting in New Delhi and cancelled scheduled trips to Russia and the United States. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and the army chief of staff headed to Uri, to investigate the attack.
"There are definite and conclusive indications that the perpetrators of Uri attack were highly trained, heavily armed and specially equipped," Singh said in a series of strongly-worded tweets.
With Uri and Pathankot attacks, Pakistan has now launched two audacious assaults against India in this year alone, apart from the regular infiltration attempts across LoC.
