IRCON snapping street lights, plunging city into darkness

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 19: Entrusted with the job of revamping the power infrastructure in the state, IRCON is working in highly arbitrary and insensitive manner and there has been no check on the lack of accountability on part of the company from any quarter.
The company, which in the process of laying new supply lines, transformers and allied power infrastructure is snapping the connections of the existing street lights in different localities of the city, plunging these localities into darkness and jeopardizing the safety and security of the residents. A concerned resident from a locality in Talab Tillo area of the city said while expressing anguish, "there are open manholes and deep potholes all over our street and it was difficult to negotiate them even when there was light, now when IRCON has snapped the connections of all street lights, you can well imagine the plight of two wheeler riders and even pedestrians". "The IRCON contractor says the company has not entered into any contract with the Jammu Municipal Corporation and unless that is done, the street lights cannot be connected" he added.
Meanwhile, residents have also complained that the MCBs (micro circuit breakers) installed by the company on top of the poles for each house trip even when the load is much below the sanctioned limit. "The MCB should trip only when the consumer withdraws more than the sanctioned load, but several times, it trips even when almost no electronic gadget is in use" said Surinder Sharma, a resident of Bharat Nagar in Talab Tillo area. "While many people have kept long bamboos to put the tripped MCB back in place, those who cannot do the needful themselves have to seek services of PDD linemen who charge Rs. 200/- to retract the tripped MCB" he added.
People of the area have asked the PDD and JMC authorities to do whatever is required to be done at their end so that the street lights are not snapped.
