Kupwara, Oct 24: A LeT commander was killed in an encounter at Lolab in Kupwara today.
A top police official said that, acting on specific information about the presence of terrorists in Lolab area of Kupwara district, a joint team of police and army cordoned off the area today morning. A joint team of security forces were conducting search operation in Kawari Warnou village, the holed up terrorists fired at them, triggering a gun battle, the official said.
However sources said that, from past few days there was a suspicious movement of some unidentified gunmen in the area, and today morning encounter broke out between terrorists and security forces in Kawari village of Lolab area, while as search operation was underway till the last reports came in. Meanwhile SSP Kupwara, Shamsheer Hussain told Early Times that, " a joint cordon and search operation was launched by SOG Lolab and 18 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) in Kawari area of Lolab last night.
Today early in the morning during a search of the area the militant who was hiding in a house has fired on the search party.
The terrorist was given opportunity to surrender but he said that, during encounter one Lashkar-e Toiba (LeT) commander was later identified as Abu Saad alias Shahid got killed, he was affiliated and was active in Lolab area for last three years. He was involved in instigating and pushing the youth of the area for stone pelting and anti India processions.
He has also let loose reign terror in the area by continuously terrorizing the common masses. The operations. was meticulously planned and executed so as to avoid any collateral damage. The militant was compelled to come out of the house and was shot dead just few feet away from the house so as to avoid any damage to the house where he was bidding, the SSP said adding one AK-47 rifle, 3 magazines, 89 rounds, 1 wireless Ikon set was also recovered from the site of encounter.
