Azad pooh-poohs empty sloganeering
10/16/2007 11:38:40 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 16 Launching an indirect attack against the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad accused the leaders of his coalition partner of blocking the developmental decisions. Addressing a public meeting at Verinag in South Kashmir, the Chief Minister said that he did not believe in hollow sloganeering or negative politics but had his mind focused on development works and infrastructure building. He said he believed in work and not in hoodwinking people through false and unachievable dreams. He said during the last two years, his government had taken up hundreds of important development works in schools, hospitals, power and roads sectors across the State and exuded confidence that in the coming year before the assembly elections a new chapter of development would have been written in the history of Jammu & Kashmir. The Chief Minister announced relocation of security forces from the famous Verinag Garden and the source of Kashmir's main river, Jhelum. He also inspected the newly constructed accommodation comprising four double store...

Early Times Reporter Katra | Oct 16 Wrestlers from India and Pakistan sweat it out on the slushy fields in Jammu and Kashmir as a part of the initiative to boost friendship and brotherhood between the two countries. Christened 'Mission Dosti' (Mission Friendship), the competition saw six participants from Pakistan engaging in the traditional style of wrestling where participants fight on raised earthen quadrangles, instead of modern-day mattresses. The wrestling match was organised in Katra, about 45 kilometers from Jammu on Monday. Pakistani participants were overwhelmed by Indian hospitality and the match highlighted the manner in which sports can act as a bridge to foster friendshi...

Worn out fighting against India, separatists torn out to each other
10/16/2007 11:35:34 PM
Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Oct 16 Apparently worn out of fight against India, the separatist leaders have now started fighting against each other in open. Though publicly they cite the ideological reasons of moderate and hardline, the fights they are picking up are essentially based on their egos and eagerness to rule the crowds in the Valley. With some of the separatists like Lone brothers and Shabir Shah preparing for elections, others like Yaseen Malik projecting themselves as "Gandhis of Kashmir", the lines of trouble are clear between the two factions of Hurriyat Conference: one headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and the other headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. The other day, Geela...

Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 16 The Government Medical College has today claimed going hitech with computerization of Out Patient Department (OPD) –but so what if in one of its associated hospitals one child dies every third day –on an average –due to lack of sufficient manpower and infrastructure. The SMGS Hospital, which is an associated hospital of Government Medical College Jammu, is the only state run advanced gynecological facility in Jammu but due to heavy rush of patients and poor availability of staff and dismal infrastructure the hospital is a worst nightmare for the patients. Just imagine there are hardly 22 trained gynecologists in the SMGS Hospital including not more ...

Prolonged stand off brings governance to grinding halt
10/16/2007 11:04:37 PM
Early Times Special Correspondent Jammu | Oct 16 Starting with bang, Azad is feared to end in whimper Prolonged stand off between the Congress and the PDP has brought the governance in the state to a grinding halt, with important decisions need be taken at the cabinet level being put off indefinitely, as a result of non holding of the cabinet meeting. Besides some transfers and postings at the higher level, which require cabinet approval and as a precedent are taken before the bi annual Darbar move, cabinet sanction to some projects is getting inordinate delay.
