| Baig's legal bid fails to save softdrink of Rs 5 crore penalty | | | | Early Times Reporter

As a Minister for Finance and Law for nearly four years, the Peoples Democratic Party stalwart Muzaffar Hussain Baig apparently did everything best to protect interests of the state but now after crossing over the fence he stood against a government contention but had to loose a legal battle to his one time 'student' eventually bringing a disappointment to his client softdrink which has been slapped with a penalty of over Rs five crores.
After Rs three crore penalty to the ICICI Lombard which had tried to get away with the tax dues, the soft drink tycoon, has come under a Rs five crore tax slap which has been upheld by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. Senior advocate Muzaffar Hussain Baig, who might have tried to "break necks" of the tax evaders during his stint as Finance Minister, defended the case of softdrink but eventually lost. Ironically, when it came to defending the State's interests, Baig's once junior Altaf Hussain Naik, the Advocate General of the J&K Government, had his way.

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has come to the rescue of a resident of the Pakistan occupied Kashmir who had come to Poonch to see his relatives but is unable to go back owing to ill health.
Ghulam Mohammad alias Moamda, a resident of village Panadri on the other side of the Line of Control had come on a valid permit to see his relatives in village Loran of Poonch district. However, during his stay here he developed serious heart and kidney and ailments was subsequently shifted to Jammu for advanced treatment.

True to its belligerent approach, Pakistan has opposed the Indian peace moves on Siachen glacier –the highest, coldest and bloodies battlefield of the world.
In a landmark decision the Indian government had recently opened the Siachen Glacier in Ladakh for trekking. The Indian Army had said that the first group of trekkers would set off later this month for the 6,300-metre (20,800-feet) high Siachen Glacier.
Pakistan foreign ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam told a weekly briefing that India's deputy ambassador had been summoned on Monday to receive a "strong protest" over the Siachen plan, the media reports reaching here said.

Jammu | Sep 17 While violence continues to be a matter of major concern in the state, the growing number of cancer cases here is also posing serious challenges before the health professionals.
According to Indian Council of Medicine Research, over 6,800 cases of cancer are reported every year. More than 50 per cent of these cancer patients are from the Valley, said Dr Nissar Ahmad Wani, oncologist, Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar.

Jammu|Sep 17 Massive response to recruitment rallies of Army and para-military forces has irked the Hizbul Mujahdeen (HM) militant outfit as it had started threatening locals to refrain from joining security forces in the bordering Rajouri and Poonch districts, sources today said.
Security forces have recovered a large number of posters from the infiltrators crossing Line of Control (LoC) -- signed by Ali Hamza, 'district commander' of HM -- which were to be disbursed among the people in the twin districts, sources said.
In the posters, written in Persian script, the outfit has warned the youths against joining security forces, they added.

India today asked Pakistan to withdraw its objections to the Tulbul project saying that the proposed navigational locks were not in violation of the Indus Water Treaty.
"Pakistan has complained that we are trying to build a barrage which is a complete misnomer as barrages are meant for diverting the flow of water which is not the case here. We want to build a navigational locks so that water level is maintained at 4.5 feet for navigational purposes," Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz told reporters here.
