| Troops asked to upgrade security grid on LoC, IB | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 21: Though the LoC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir have not witnessed any incident of ceasefire violations by the Pakistani Army during the last four days the Indian troops, guarding the border, have been directed to avoid doing anything that could lead to the downgrading of the border management. Official sources said that the Indian troops have been told to continue round the clock patrolling on the LoC and the IB so that not a single militant was able to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian troops have been also told not to show any complacency in their vigil and focus their attention on upgrading the counter infiltration grid on the entire border. Need for strengthening counter infiltration gird had risen following reports that about 2500 militants, equipped with sophisticated weap-ons, have been brought on the launch pads in various sectors across the LoC and the IB. Sources said that if only 20 to 30 per cent of these militants manage to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir t hey would derail the peace process. Senior Government functionaries said that as a result of tough postures adopted by New Delhi and on account of intervention b y the US authorities the PPP led Government in Islamabad directed its Army commanders to desist from violating ceasefire on the border but the Army functionaries in Pakistan cannot be trusted. They said that previous experience has shown that the establishment in Islamabad or the civilian regime in Islamabad does not hold any sway on the Armed Forces. Hence in the context of this development the Indian troops have been told to strengthen the security and counter infiltration grid on the LoC and the IB. |
