Omar forced to drop pre-poll alliance demand
1/22/2013 12:46:58 AM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 21: The day Rahul Gandhi made his first speech as vice-president of the party from Jaipur, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressing party workers in Srinagar didn't make any mention of the pre-poll alliance with the Congress.
Omar earlier on many occasions had said the Abdullahs' and Gandhi family share a personal bond. He had said both parties had worked well in the past. Omar by making these statements was hinting at pre-poll alliance.
However, he didn't made any mention of it the day Rahul Gandhi was to address the nation.
Rahul Gandhi in his speech had said that party wants to groom about 15 leaders in every State who could be capable of becoming the Chief Minister.
The message was clear that Rahul, wants the Congress to come on its own in Government formation and also has leaders to steer it.
The new Cong president had also made it clear, though he didn't say it directly, that party has to evolve on its own so that it's not dependent on others and reduce to play the second fiddle, which it's doing right now in the State, despite having potential to evolve more politically.
Omar Abdullah, who claims to have personal relation with Rahul Gandhi, couldn't afford to antagonize him by making him to accept his (Omar) political wish.
The Chief Minister, know that his political survival depends on coming to power and for it he needs the support of the Congress.
However, Rahul Gandhi now being the second most important leader of the party, can't afford to have his own way. He would be consulting senior leaders, which had said during his address, and majority of him-who had been in governance for quite a while- wouldn't be in favour of pre-poll alliance.
The second most important factor is PDP president Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. He being a former senior Cong leader, knows the party well and still has relation with it.
Mufti wouldn't take pre-poll alliance hands down and has the capability and leadership to put Cong in bad light, if it is to happen so.
The political map is evolving in a manner where Cong can't afford to antagonize some and please some.
