| On the eve of Republic Day, NC demanded settlement of 'basic issues' | | Violating the mandate | | Neha JAMMU, Jan 27: Indians across the nation celebrate January 26 each year as Republic Day with great pomp and show, remember the supreme sacrifices made by the freedom fighters during the freedom struggle, reiterate their resolve to defend the territorial integrity of the country and take pledge that they will not hesitate to sacrifice their all for the sake of their country. It was on this day in 1950 that the Indian Constitution was enforced in its entirety across the country, barring Jammu & Kashmir. Jammu & Kashmir was excluded from the political and constitutional organization of India at the behest of the National Conference with the Congress making common cause with it and doing all that it could to drive the solitary State of Jammu & Kashmir away from the national mainstream. The Congress hatched a conspiracy against the nation to keep the NC leadership on its right side and enforced the essentially divisive, communal, anti-people and anti-democratic Article 370 which not only granted absolute legislative powers to the ruling elite in Kashmir but also created an impression the world over that Jammu & Kashmir was not an integral part of India to the same extent as other states were and that there were certain issues which were yet to be resolved. That the Congress created serious doubts in the minds of the nation and the world as a whole about the political future of Jammu & Kashmir -- which otherwise had become an integral part of India on October 26, 1947, when the Maharaja of the state, who alone had the power to take decision on the political future of his state, signed the Instrument of Accession - and that the NC continues to question the integration of the state with New Delhi could be seen from what NC working president and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on the eve of Republic Day (January 25). He not only "appealed" to the separatist leaders to open talks with the centre, but also referred to certain issues as basic issues. "When they (Kashmiri separatists) can talk to the leadership of neighbouring country (Pakistan) they should also talk to the leaders of their own country and work for settlement of the basic political issues confronting Jammu & Kashmir for the larger interests of the people of the State", he said in his Republic Day address. Which "basic political issues confronting Jammu & Kashmir" he talked about? Obviously, he talked about the so-called Kashmir problem and its resolution according to the wishes of people of the Valley minus, of course, Kashmiri Hindus, Kashmiri Sikhs and other religious and ethnic minorities. He undoubtedly violated the mandate he enjoyed as head of the government, questioned the Indian Constitution and Jammu & Kashmir Constitution which clearly say Jammu & Kashmir is and shall be an integral part of India and sought to reopen the already settled issue. As for the Congress, which was in power at the time of accession and when the Indian constitution was enforced and which is in power at the centre today, did not question the Chief Minister for what he did on the eve of this Republic Day, or for that matter all such statements he made as Chief Minister during the past more than four years. It did not tell him that he crossed the line by saying what he said. On the contrary, it continued to share power with it in the state and rule the country with its support at the centre. It is a matter of grave concern that there are elements in the political establishments in the state and at the centre who have been going against the constitutional confines and conducting themselves in an irresponsible manner. The silver-lining is that people have started recognizing the dangerous ramifications of what these elements have been saying and doing and it can be assumed that things would change sooner than later. A wave of anger is sweeping the land and it is quite visible. |
