Jammu, Jan 27: Several noted schools of the city are violating norms as well as ethics and using dignitaries and Constitutional authorities as models in the advertisements being aired by them in local television channel to promote their institutions.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and former Governor, Lt. General S K Sinha are being used as models obviously without seeking their consent in the advertisements of these schools which are telecast on couple of local channels suggesting as if these constitutional authorities are recommending them.
"The modus operandi of these schools tantamounts to illegal trade practice", explained a senior lawyer adding, "The message which advertisers are trying to convey through these dignitaries is deceptive and misleading besides being unethical". "You cannot use the picture of any person in promoting a product or service without his or her consent" he averred.
The advertisements have been cleverly edited from the speeches of the former Governor and the Chief Minister when they visited these schools during their annual or foundation day functions. The excerpts of their speeches wherein they have eulogized the achievements of the school in the academics and extracurricular activities have been cleverly edited and put together to compose these advertisements.
Director Consumer Affairs Parvez Malik when contacted agreed that it was unethical and unlawful. "This definitely is an illegal trade practice and we shall initiate legal action against the defaulting
schools" Malik said.
Director School Education, Dev Lata When contacted also agreed that the practice being resorted to by these schools for their commercial gains is totally unethical. "I shall direct my officers to get the
clippings which are being aired and initiate appropriate action against the defaulting schools" she lamented.
