ET Plus Report Jammu, Mar 20 : Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar Vice-Chancellor University of Jammu stressed upon the need to review to the strategies to re-examine the efforts to arrest the declining sex ratio in India especially in North-West India. Inaugurating the National Seminar on "Declining Sex-Ratio in North-West India" organized by the Department of Sociology, University of Jammu in collaboration with the Centre for Women Study, University of Jammu at the Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium on Wednesday said that the atrocities against women in various forms have been an integral part of the civilization since ages. Speaking on the theme of the seminar, Prof. Ishar said that India has become home to some of the most barbaric acts against the women, starting from dowry death, Sati up to female infanticide at female foeticide. In the welcome address, Prof. Abha Chowhan dwelt on the broad contours of the seminar. Delivering the Introductory address Prof. Poonam Dhawan, Director, Centre for Women Studies, University of Jammu said that the seminar has been organized in the background of the long standing concerned-decline in sex ratio. She said that declined in the sex ration has been serious matter of the concerned. Referring to the latest census report she said that the state of J&K has for the first time shown a huge dip in female to male ratio. She said that the reasons commonly put responsible for decline in sex ration are son preference, neglect of girl child resulting in higher mortality at younger age, female infanticide and female foeticide and these have been coupled with easy access of technology. Prof. Tulsi Patel, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi delivered a Keynote Address. Prof. J.K Pundir, Department of Sociology, CCS University, Meerut was guest of honor on the occasion. Dr. Vishav Raksha Presented the vote of thanks. |
