| Skeletal Opposition walks out, questioning sanctity of LA proceedings | | | Aman Sharma JAMMU, Mar 20: Questioning the sanctity of the proceedings of the ongoing Budget Session of the State Legislative Assembly in the absence of almost an entire Opposition, the residual Opposition staged walkout from the people’s House, demanding that PDP and BJP who boycotted House proceedings on different pretexts be persuaded to return. NPP MLA from Ramnagar Harshdev while raising the issue said that the Government had a responsibility towards the people of the State and it needed to be more accommodating. "First PDP and now BJP have decided to stay away from the House, there is no sanctity of any proceedings of the House in the absence of an Opposition," Harshdev said. While requesting a review of the decision to suspend BJP MLA Jugal Kishore for rest of the session following previous day's heated exchanges with Minister for Social Welfare Sakina Itoo, Harshdev said, "Sometimes members do get agitated while expressing themselves, but Government needs to be more accommodative. I request the Chair to review the decision to suspend the MLA for the session," Harsh said. JSM MLA Ashwani Sharma while seeking to clear the air on the issue said that the issue was a mere misunderstanding and no member has ever been disrespectful to the women members of the House. "I have been member of this House for 11 years, but there has never been an incident of disrespect towards women members. Though we try to be within limits, but do lose temper at times. This was just a misunderstanding and hence I request that the suspension of Jugal Kishore be revoked," Ashwani said. The appeals of Harsh and Ashwani, however, met with stiff resistance from GM Saroori and Shamima Firdous. Speaker Mubarak Gul and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Mir Saifullah appealed to the PDP and the BJP to return to the House, however, Speaker reiterated that House had resolved to suspend Jugal Kishor and he could not decide against it. Just as the proceedings of the Question Hour resumed at 10.31, skeletal Opposition comprising Harshdev Singh, Yashpal Kundal and Ashwini Sharma staged a walkout reiterating that the proceedings had no meaning without the Opposition. |
